January 2004
The Blues begin the New Year in 11th position and although Europe is a distant possibility, a top ten finish is still very much on the cards. However, no new signings are added during the transfer window.
The first game of 2004 sees the focus switch away from the Premiership and on to the FA Cup. Top-flight promotion chasers Norwich City provide the opposition, but Everton run out comfortable 3-1 winners thanks to a brace from Duncan Ferguson and a Kevin Kilbane goal.
Millennium Giant of the 1940s and former club captain T.G. Jones passes away at the age of 86. In his Goodison career he made 178 appearances, scoring five goals. Former team-mate Dave Hickson said: "It's a very sad loss indeed."

Everton reserve one of their best performances of the season for the visit of Arsenal in a midweek fixture at Goodison Park. The atmosphere inside the ground is electric, particularly when Tomasz Radzinski's 75th minute strike cancelled out Kanu's opener.
Not even a goal of the season contender from Kevin Kilbane can stop Fulham recording a 1-2 win in the Premiership fixture at Loftus Road and more disappointment follows when former star Graham Stuart secures the points for Charlton at Goodison.
Only a last minute equaliser from Francis Jeffers gives the Blues a replay against Fulham in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup and then a vintage performance from Nigel Martyn earns the Blues a point in the Anfield derby. "It was one of the best performances of my career," he later admits.
STAT ATTACK - JANUARY
- Duncan Ferguson became only the second player to score to two
penalties in an FA Cup game, which was also the Blues first FA Cup
win under David Moyes.
- Kevin Campbell made his 500th appearance on English soil
against Arsenal - and Tomasz Radzinski's goal now means that he
has scored four in four games against the Gunners.
- Nigel Martyn clocks up his 600th league appearance in the
Manchester United match, which is the first 3-4 loss at Goodison
for 20 years.
- The Fulham game in the FA Cup marked Francis Jeffers first goal for the club in three years and the first in the competition by an on-loan player.
