Bill Kenwright personally funds the cost of travel for 1,000 Evertonians for the FA Cup replay with Fulham. The Blues sell out an increased allocation of 3,000 for the game, but even that isn't enough to spur Moyes' men to victory.

Steed Malbranque's extra-time goal sees Everton knocked out of the FA Cup and more disappointment follows. The Blues trail Champions Manchester United 0-3 at half time, produce an amazing fightback to level the scores, but Ruud van Nistlerooy's last minute strike gives the Red Devils a heartbreaking victory.

Niclas Alexandersson reveals that he is going back to Sweden to finish his career. The World Cup star has signed a pre-contract agreement with IFK Gothenburg and will move there at the end of the season.

The manager blames poor defending for a lacklustre 0-3 defeat at Birmingham City and he rings the changes for the following trip to Southampton. Meanwhile, youngsters Leon Osman and Peter Clarke are sent out on-loan to Derby County and Coventry City respectively.

Rooney battles with Kinsella and Barry

Joseph Yobo returns from African Nations Cup duty and Tobias Linderoth also comes back into the side for the long trip to St. Mary's Stadium. However, a last-minute strike from Fabrice Fernandes hands the Saints an unlikely point, as once again, the Blues snatch a point from the jaws of victory.

There is more sad news for the Blues when another former star, Tommy Eglington dies at the age of 82 in Dublin. Eglington made 428 appearances and scored 82 goals during his time at Goodison and was a member of the side that last scooped promotion to the top-flight back in 1954.

However, the month ends on a high when goals from Thomas Gravesen and Tomasz Radzinski give Everton maximum points against Aston Villa. It was the Blues' first win of 2004 and Moyes is delighted: "The lads did great, because it was a tough game, but the lads stuck at it and came up with the goods."

STAT ATTACK - FEBRUARY

  • Wayne Rooney bagged a brace in the Premiership for the first time against Southampton, but the 3-3 draw with the Saints is only the second time the Blues have registered that scoreline in the Premiership. The first came against Chelsea in the 1994/5 season.
  • The goal against Aston Villa was Thomas Gravesen's first for the Blues since September 2002.
