Denmark v Italy 14/06/2004 17:00
An excellent display of goalkeeping from Thomas Sorensen and Gianluigi Buffon shut out both Denmark and Italy in the opening match of Group C.
Playing in extremely hot temperatures in Guimaraes, the stalemate proved to be a highly entertaining encounter, with both sides enjoying chances to win the game.
The Danes were without Everton star Thomas Gravesen, who was suspended after being sent off in their final EURO 2004 qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Denmark dominated the first half but it was Italy who created the best chances with Sørensen saving brilliantly off Totti and Del Piero from close range just before half time.
Italy upped the tempo after the break and Sørensen again saved sharply from Vieri and Totti. Denmark's wide men stretched Italy throughout and Olsen's side could have won the game.
However, Buffon too was on form in the Italian goal, saving well in particular from Tomasson 15 minutes from time.
