Steve Burtenshaw
Caretaker Manager: 1977
Steve Burtenshaw was the caretaker manager in January 1977 when the board of directors dispensed with the services of Billy Bingham.
Burtenshaw had been a coach under Bingham and was the natural choice to steady the ship whilst a new man was sought.
His first match in charge was at Ipswich Town and his second was a semi-final!
Bingham had steered Everton through to the penultimate stage of the League Cup against Bolton Wanderers and the first leg at Goodison represented Burtenshaw's bow.
The match ended in a 1-1 draw and Gordon Lee was at the helm by the time the 2nd leg was played at Burnden Park.
As a player, Burtenshaw was a one-club man, serving Brighton & Hove Albion between 1952 and 1966.
He later coached The Seagulls and then had spells at Arsenal and Sheffield Wednesday before joining Everton.
After leaving Goodison he managed Queens Park Rangers from 1978 to 1979 and later returned to Arsenal.
He was caretaker boss at Highbury following the resignation of Don Howe in 1986.
Burtenshaw retired from the game after having spells as a scout at QPR and Manchester City.
