Alessandro Pistone was born in Milan ON THIS DAY in 1975.

He played for home town club Inter before being brought to the Premiership by Newcastle manager Kenny Dalglish for £4.3 million in 1997.

Pistone was bought by Walter Smith at the end of June 2000 for a transfer fee of £3 million.

Primarily a left-back, he has played in every position across the back four in his time with the club.

A player, who likes to move up and down the pitch, he is renowned for his ability to deliver damaging crosses for his side's forward players.

Mike Newell joined Everton ON THIS DAY in 1989.

The Scouser joined the Blues from Leicester City for £850,000 with striker Wayne Clarke moving in the opposite direction.

During his two-year stay with the club he made 89 appearances, scoring 19 goals.

In November 1991 he moved to Blackburn for £1.1 million.
