On This Day: 25/11
Everton beat Bayern Munich 3-1 ON THIS DAY in 1987.
With English clubs still effectively under house arrest from European competition, the approaching centenary of the Football League would have to be marked in some way other than their representatives cutting a sway through Europe.
Thus West German League champions Bayern Munich were invited to play their English counterparts Everton in a centenary match at Goodison.
The game was sponsored by Mercantile Credit.
Despite all the activity behind the scenes, just over 13,000 attended the game in which Everton repeated their European Cup-Winners' Cup score of three years previously.
Two goals from Graeme Sharp and one from Adrian Heath only served to show just how much English football was missing European competition and vice-versa.
