v Arsenal

Saturday 23 August K.O. 17:30

On This Day: 25/07

Goodison Park staged the World Cup semi-final between West Germany and Russia ON THIS DAY in 1966.

The Russians cause was not helped by having Chislenko sent-off and another player handicapped by injury in a vicious match.

Germany finally won the game 2-1. Haller and Beckenbauer scored for the Germans while Porkujan grabbed a consolation for the Russians in the closing stages of the match.

Richard Wright signed for Everton ON THIS DAY in 2002 in a deal worth £3.5 million, rising to £4.5 million depending on appearances.

Wright made his full first team Ipswich debut on May 6, 1995 aged just 17 against Coventry City.

He moved to Arsenal for £6million where he won a championship and FA Cup winners medal in the 2001/02 season.

After moving to the Blues, a string of impressive performances earned him a recall to the England squad.

However, his 2003/04 season was a nightmare as he suffered a mysterious knee-injury which kept him out for the majority of the campaign.
