On This Day: 21/06
Gary Ablett left Everton to join Birmingham City ON THIS DAY in 1996.
A season before, Gary had been instrumental in Joe Royle's tremendous transformation, as he guided the Blues from the doldrums of the Premiership to safety and the FA Cup Final.
Gary was playing at left-back on that day and in doing so became the first player to gain FA Cup winner's medals with both Everton and Liverpool and the first player to appear both for and against Everton in FA Cup Finals.
Ablett appeared 155 times for the Blues, scoring six times, but left for St. Andrews for £400,000 to link up with Steve Bruce in the centre of Birmingham's defence.
