v West Brom

Saturday 13 September K.O. 15:00

On This Day: 19/06

Everton announced the resignation of Howard Kendall and announced his successor ON THIS DAY in 1987.

Kendall had already agreed to take over as manage of Spanish side Athletico Bilbao, but his number 2, Colin Harvey, decided not to follow suit, but instead made the step up to manage the club he joined as a schoolboy.

Howard admitted that it was a wrench to leave Goodison. “It has been a difficult decision to make, but I feel that it is the right one. I have had six tremendous years at the club,” he said.

However, the lure of European football proved to be too great and the Blues' most successful manager ended his first term at Everton.
