The match was an FA Cup First Round replay after the first game, at Ayresome Park, had ended as a 1-1 draw.

Both teams opened up at Goodison Park however and gave a thrilling exhibition of attacking football.

Everton's goals came from Bertie Freeman, Harry Makepeace, Jack Taylor, Tommy White and Alex Young.

Everton beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1 ON THIS DAY in 1946.

After losing 1-2 to Rovers at Ewood Park the week before the Blues gained revenge with a 4-1 win in front of 23,538 at Goodison Park.

Harry Catterick scored a hat-trick with Wally Fielding grabbing the other.

That season the Blues came second in the Football League North Division.
