On This Day: 17/06
The Blues made a late bid to sign the enigmatic Stan Collymore ON THIS DAY in 1995.
Everton, who had just won the FA Cup, made an £8.5 million bid for the Nottingham Forest striker, who had been in impressive form for the Reds.
Joe Royle was convinced that the lanky striker would be perfect alongside Duncan Ferguson, but could not beat off competition from Liverpool.
As it happens, Collymore flopped in his two years with the Reds, refusing to move from his home in Cannock to the North West and despite a number of goals, never lived up to his record price tag.
He was sold to Aston Villa in 1997 and since then had a host of clubs including, Bradford City, Fulham, Leicester and Real Oviedo.
He announced his retirement from the game aged 30, in 2001, due to stress.
