A then record crowd of 44,000 packed into Goodison Park to witness Everton play Liverpool in their first ever League meeting.
Everton won the game 3-0 in front of the Lord Mayor of Liverpool.
McInnes scored the first goal for Everton after ten minutes. The other goals came from Alex Latta and John Bell.
Jimmy O'Neill was born in Dublin ON THIS DAY in 1931.
The extremely dependable goalkeeper was first spotted by Everton whilst playing local junior football in Ireland.
He was offered professional forms in May 1949 and went on to make over 200 League appearances for the Blues.
During his career he won 17 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
Albert Dunlop was the man to eventually take his place and O'Neill was sold to Stoke City for £5,000 in July 1960.
