A crowd of 19,534 were at Meadow Lane for the FA Cup Sixth Round tie.

Kevin Richardson and Andy Gray scored for the Blues to set up a clash with Southampton at Highbury.

The win meant that Everton would play in the FA Cup semi-final for the 19th time in their history.

Alan Whittle was born in Liverpool ON THIS DAY in 1950.

Whittle was once described by Harry Catterick as 'The greatest Everton discovery of all time.'

The forward made his Blues debut in a 6-2 win over West Bromwich Albion in May 1968 and won a League Championship medal in 1970.

In December 1972 he moved to Crystal Palace for £100,000.

During his Everton career he made 89 appearances and scored 26 goals.
