Regional League football was resumed during the Second World War ON THIS DAY in 1939.

A meeting of the Football League in Crewe announced that after it had become apparent that the country was unlikely to be invaded games would begin again on 21st October.

The country was effectively divided into eight regions (there was a 50 mile travel limit imposed on the nation by the government) irrespective of their League status before the outbreak of war.


Everton reached the Second Round of the European Cup-Winners' Cup ON THIS DAY in 1984.

The Blues overcame University Club Dublin 1-0 on aggregate thanks to a goal from Graeme Sharp.

After a goalless first leg draw in Dublin Everton were made to work hard for their win against the students.

Everton beat Slovan Bratislava, Fortuna Sittard, Bayern Munich and Rapid Vienna in the following rounds to bring the European Cup Winners' Cup home to Goodison.
