v Arsenal

Saturday 23 August K.O. 17:30

On This Day: 02/05

Everton won the league ON THIS DAY in 1928.

The Blues were declared Champions, for a third time, on a day when they didn't even kick a ball.

Huddersfield's 3-0 defeat at Villa Park meant that Everton could not be caught at the top of the table.

Warney Cresswell was the captain, Ted Critchley dominated one wing and Alec Troup the other, but this title year was focused around one man – Dixie Dean.

Scoring 60 goals in 39 games Dean created a league record that has never been challenged.

Everton beat Preston North End 5-0 ON THIS DAY in 1936.

A crowd of 21,135 were at Goodison to witness the Blues thrash the Lancastrians in their final league game of the season.

J. Bell and C.Leyfield both scored twice, with Cliff Britton grabbing the other.
