Mike Walker

Mike Walker

January to November 1994
Mike Walker had performed wonders with unfashionable Norwich City - taking them to unchartered heights of European football - and his was a much-linked name every time a bigger vacancy arose.

So his appointment to the Goodison hot-seat in January 1994 was greeted with optimism by the fans - a feel-good factor that was substantiated by a splendid 6-2 win over Swindon in his home debut.

The subsequent FA Cup defeat to First Division Bolton was viewed as a disappointment, but as no reason to panic.

Walker lost his way though and May 7th 1994 was very much a time to panic!

The Toffees eventually defeated Wimbledon to secure top-flight status that day, but it was a totally unacceptable situation for Everton to be in.

No wins from the opening 12 matches the following season proved to be too much for the Board of Directors to tolerate and Walker's short but eventful reign was terminated.

He was an honest and committed man but he came nowhere near to replicating the success he'd enjoyed at Carrow Road. His overall contribution shouldn't be entirely dismissed as abject failure though.

He signed Duncan Ferguson, took the gamble on Daniel Amokachi and brought Anders Limpar to the Club. So it wasn't all bad.
