The People's Club

1981 - 2008

Howard Kendall was lured abroad to take over at Atletico Bilbao and his more than able right-hand man, Colin Harvey, stepped into the breach.

The Blues finished 4th in Harvey's first season, and reached the semi-finals of the League Cup.

In the summer of 1988 the club transfer record was smashed when Tony Cottee joined from West Ham United for £2.5 million.

Everton ended the campaign at Wembley but the FA Cup Final defeat against Liverpool was secondary to the Hillsborough tragedy a month earlier that united the city in grief.

Tangible success eluded Harvey, and after a 2 wins in 12 games start to the 1990-91 season he was relieved of his duties.

Howard Kendall was invited back, and one his first tasks was to reinstate Harvey as his number two.

Optimism reached new levels, but again, it was a period of under achievement.

Supporters look back at Kendall's second term of office and, more often than not, select the dramatic 4-4 FA Cup draw with Liverpool at Goodison as the highlight.

A Dave Watson goal gave Everton the win in the 2nd replay, but the supporters wanted more, and Kendall, unable to deliver, left the club again in December 1993.

Mike Walker was tempted away from Norwich City in the New Year, but he couldn't repeat the success he had enjoyed at Carrow Road - in fact, Everton came within an ace of relegation.
