January began with an FA Cup third round clash with League One Carlisle.

The lower-league outfit gave an excellent account of themselves but were eventually despatched by goals from James Vaughan, Tim Cahill and Leighton Baines.

That game was watched by Everton's new loan signing Landon Donovan and the USA star was to make an instant impression in Everton's next game away at Arsenal.

He crossed for Leon Osman to score Everton's first but the game eventually finished 2-2 - Steven Pienaar scoring a remarkable goal for Everton's second.

The Toffees took heart from that performance though, putting in their best performance of the campaign so far to beat Manchester City 2-0.

FA Cup disappointment followed though as Birmingham won 2-1 at Goodison but the Blues finished the month on a high with wins over Sunderland (2-0) and Wigan (1-0)
