Coleman Is Player Of The Season
Seamus Coleman admitted he was ‘humbled and honoured’ after being named Everton’s Player of the Season for 2013/14.
The Republic of Ireland international collected the top prize to complete an awards evening double after earlier winning the Players’ Player of the Season accolade.
Coleman, whose buccaneering performances throughout the campaign had seen him net an impressive seven goals from right-back, was the clear winner in the online evertonfc.com fan vote.
The former Sligo Rovers man narrowly missed out on scooping a triple crown, with his scorching long-range strike away at Swansea City shortlisted in the Goal of the Season category – a prize which went to Ross Barkley’s curling finish at home to Manchester City
After receiving the main award from his manager Roberto Martinez, Coleman told evertontv: “It’s indescribable to win these two accolades.
“When I arrived here in 2009 I couldn’t have imagined I’d be stood here with these awards in my hands.
“There must have been a lot of contenders for both of these awards this season and that says a lot about this team.”
Coleman’s contributions over the last year have also been recognised by his Premier League peers who last week voted the 25-year-old in the PFA Team of the Year.
Indeed, the full-back set his standards for the 2013/14 season on the Premier League’s opening day when he was on the scoresheet in a 2-2 draw at Norwich City.
Flourishing under Martinez’s free-flowing tactics, the goals continued to flood in. He found the target as the Blues hit both Stoke City and Fulham for four.
Coleman bookended the festive period with blockbusters in the 2-1 victories over Swansea City and Southampton, before he was again in the right place to complete a 4-0 FA Cup third-round rout of Queens Park Rangers and net an injury-time winner against Cardiff in mid-March.
Despite his much-hailed final third involvements, Coleman’s primary duties in defence has helped the Blues concede just 39 top-flight goals all season – a crucial factor the impressive fifth placed finish.
"Seamus is a good example of a footballer with an incredible attitude and appetite for the game,” manager Roberto Martinez said just last month. “He grows month by month. He's one of the best full-backs in world football.”
A fitting tribute to Everton’s Player of the Year for 2013/14 – the man who has embodied the Spaniard’s first year in charge at Goodison Park.
