Barkley Nets Goal Of The Season
Ross Barkley’s stunning first-time strike against Manchester City has won the Everton Goal of the Season award for 2013/14.
Evertonians took to Twitter to pick their winner, with Barkley’s instinctive screamer pipping his solo strike against Newcastle United, Bryan Oviedo’s effort against Manchester United and Seamus Coleman’s rocket at Swansea.
Barkley was suitably handed his accolade at the St George’s Hall by Graeme Sharp – Everton’s leading post-war goalscorer.
Speaking about his award-winning strike, Barkley said: “It has to be my favourite because it was at Goodison at the Gwladys Street End, though I’d have to say it is up there with my Newcastle goal.”
It seemed like the leading contenders for this award had been settled upon prior to last weekend, only for Barkley to produce a late rival in the Blues’ final home outing of the campaign against Manuel Pellegrini’s men.
The goal gave Everton a 10th-minute lead in the eventual 3-2 defeat. A swift attack saw Leighton Baines feed Steven Naismith, who in turn laid the ball off for Barkley to bend an exquisite shot from 25 yards that curled and looped over England teammate Joe Hart.
