Barkley Is Young Player Of The Year

Ross Barkley was rewarded for another season of progress as he scooped the Young Player of the Season accolade at Everton’s 8th Annual End of Season Awards.

The midfielder topped a poll on evertonfc.com and collected his prize during a ceremony at Liverpool’s St George’s Hall on Thursday evening.

Barkley was deemed deserving of the award after augmenting his exciting talent with valuable experience during the 2012/13 season, a campaign which saw him make 27 competitive appearances in four different first-team competitions.

A delighted Barkley admitted he is now already excited about the prospect of next season, explaining: "I am really pleased to win the award, it comes after a lot of hard work.

"Next season is massive for me. I am already looking forward to it. I have to go away for the Under-20 World Cup, come back to pre-season and try to impress the new manager."

After starring in the 5-0 Carling Cup second round victory over Leyton Orient in August, Barkley headed out on loan to Sheffield Wednesday where he was a regular for the Owls throughout the duration of his three-month stay.

The 19-year-old returned to Merseyside in December and made cameo appearances in the Premier League games against Stoke City and Chelsea before departing for another loan spell in the Championship, this time with Leeds United.

David Moyes recalled the Club’s Academy graduate after one month at Elland Road and such was the Scot’s faith, the youngster was named in the starting line-up for the challenging trips to Champions League-chasing Tottenham and Arsenal – both matches that saw Everton pick up hard-earned points.

The match at the Emirates in April in particular whetted the appetite of the viewing public, with Barkley’s eye-catching display singled out in several national newspaper reports, many of which described the game as the night that the boy became a man.

With a call-up to the England Under-20s squad for this summer’s World Cup a probability, bigger and better things seemingly lie ahead for Everton’s teenage midfield marauder.

Young Player of the Season was sponsored by Chaophraya and Palm Sugar.
