1969/70 Season

1969/70 Season

This was the season when the School of Science reached its pinnacle and Everton reigned supreme in English football.

Harry Catterick's, side, containing the likes of Alan Ball, Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall, was never going to be accused of playing dull football and they started the marathon season with a devastating sprint that left Don Revie and Leeds settling for second from the start.

Harvey, Brian Labone, and Keith Newton may have missed spells with injury and Ball may have been victim to his fiery temperament on occasion but this Everton side was not to be beaten.

Only a brief blip in September saw them off the top of the table before Christmas and despite a resurgent Leeds taking over for a time in January, it always seemed destined to be Everton's title.

Leeds were distracted by semi-finals in the FA and European Cup competitions against Manchester United and Celtic and with Alan Whittle on fire up front, Everton stormed ahead.

Wins against Liverpool (the only side to beat Everton at home earlier in the season) and Chelsea pushed Everton forward and a win against West Brom sealed it, with Whittle and Harvey sealing a memorable win.

The only slight disappointment was on missing out on Leeds' league points record of 67, but that was easily forgotten as celebrations ensued on the terraces of Goodison.
