Posts: 305March 2012 The problem is it was not only the selection but the formation. Whenever Rodwell and Felliani play together we dont perform. Therefore rest Felliani. Why put victor on and to be honest where was he playing. If its wide then plat Pinaar there or give Gueye a game. We had no creativity in the middle so play Ossie or give Barkley a game (he probably wont be playing Saturday).
Resting Drenthe who never plays a full 90 or Jelavic who has only played around 2hrs of football or Ossie who has only just come back makes no sense. Why not rest Baines who has played every minute or Distin who is mid 30s or Felliani who is our most influencial player?
I think our biggest problem is our tactics this season and if you look at the games we have lost it is becasue we have played with 2 DMs and therefore unable to get out our half like last night. I support Moyes but wish he would stop feeling the need to play 2 DMs.

I think it's fair to say that once the team sheet was out there was no danger of us breaking our 10 year record of no wins at Anfield. I understand the need to focus more on Saturdays game simply because it represents a chance to win something this season - in effect this game was sacrificed to that end - but those who forked out money to watch it deserved better.

i agree in parts about the players who could have rested.......and i thought playing anichebe was the wrong option, i think moyes should have played gueye.....i would have preferred to see distin rested instead of heitinga, as i think heitnga can manage 3 games in a week, i think distin is too old for that......
i don't agree osman should have played, he's just back from injury so 3 games in a week was definately not a possibility for him, but he'll benefit from the 30 mins he did get.
I would have liked to have seen fellaini and baines rested, but lets face it, they're both too good and too important to leave out right now......had moyes left them out the backlash would have been even bigger than it already is.......
i honestly believe Moyes still picked a team that he thought could get a result (and knows Fellaini & baines energy levels better than us).....and its the sort of team i wanted him to pick last night (anichebe aside).........we'll find out on saturday if he's done the right thing.....i'm pretty sure if we're watching Everton play at wembley next month, none of us will be crying about the merseyside derby -
Posts: 305March 2012 I just hope he plays with only Felliani in the holding role and allows Ossie and hopefully Gibson to make things happen in the middle. My fear is Neville, Rodwell or Heitinga play in the middle and then we will be up against it.

Posts: 5,190March 2012 just watch moyes keep rodwell in the side and osman will be on the bench, and we will be overly negative, wouldnt suprise me to see him leave jags in the side and have johnny in the middle, welcome back our wobbly defence, people seem to think jags and rodwell played to give players a rest he may of played them to get them fitter and sharper for saturday and we will be back to our pre xmas form with them.

From a professional perspective..me personally..I would always set up for the game i'm about to play..in this case the liverpool game was the most important..so I would have played my strongest team for this game and forgot saturday...then subsequently played my strongest team to start satuday....Obviously liverpools priorities were right last night.. they wanted the 3 points and will concentrate on stoke AFTER the everton game...
Liverpool haven't been performing well this season and although to say "they were there for the taking" is maybe a bit strong I believe we would have given them a game with our strongets team out...
Emotionally I suspect the "10 years with no trophy..and a quarter final looming" was playing heavily on Moyes mind..but tbh I was gutted when I heard the team news about 7 oclock last night and "knew" we'd get beat...after all it is only a quarter final and...and it's a big AND...we lose saturday..our season is dead and buried and how does Moyes vindicate that ? -

He rested cahill last night, so he’s playing Saturday
He rested osman, then gave him 30 mins run out…so he’s playing Saturday
He rested drenthe, then gave him a 30 mins run out…so he’s playing
He took coleman off, so we can assume he’ll be playing Saturday
Can’t imagine he won’t play Fellaini…..
So that’s our midfield 4 with Cahill playing behind Jelavic……

do you not think liverpool could afford to go with a strong team because they have more time to recover....
we play saturday at 12:30, liverpool play sunday at 4pm.....
i think had those fixtures been reversed, both teams would have looked different last night.......

he gave rodwell a run out to get him sharper? he will be playing saturday, drenthe wont feature , we will have to put up with osman on the left as moyes dont do players in there best position. -

no ..because we also play wednesday against arsenal...if we'd have played sunday at 4 ..some would have moaned that we had no time to recover for that......
For me the remainder of our season balanced on that game last night....save the best for the quarter final/sacrifice 3 points and league position....hopefully we dont lose against sunderland...and the selection is justified...
we then play arsenal in the league 4 days later ..no easy game...again if we lose that game..where does that leave us..
we then go away to swansea on the saturday....no easy game by any stretch of the imgination down there...lose that and where are we at ??
all if's and buts .......which is why I would take every game as it comes and always play my strongets available team...
to be fair was gobsmacked moyes did what he did last night as he is just NOT that risk averse.....10 years tells us that...
so damned if he does..and damned if he doesn't... -

All season teams play mid week matches before and after weekend fixtures.. They are professional players at the peak of their fitness. They have 3 days to recover from their 90 mins. I think as KHL said it is Moyes desperate to win a trophey.
I think we are trying too hard to justify it. Moyes gambled and lost. We all saw a poor team selection and bad formation. IMO he believes in the 2 DM as he has continually resorted to it all season however if you look at the results they are normally the poor ones.
Thats my grieveance that he has not learnt and keeps making the same selections. He does a lot right but this one he keeps trying and failing. -

I agree Moyes was influenced last night by the fact he hasn’t won a trophy in 10 years…….but also, as you’ve pointed out yourself, we have a lot of games in this 2 week period…..so for me Moyes has to make use of his squad in all these games…..Alex ferguson has been doing it for years…..
For me the only problem with last night, was the opposition…I hated that we were playing Liverpool…but I think we have to stop worrying about things like that and focus on the bigger picture…….as we’re all saying, Saturday will tell if moyes is justified or not………everyone has to remember, even had moyes play our “strongest team” last night, we still might have lost too….follow that with defeat on Saturday and I think people would be a lot more angry…..

Liverpol were better than us on the night...saurez and gerrard were superb...we had vic and straq !!
whether we win or lose saturday shouldn't be a factor...we want to finish as high up the league as possible..so do lpool they fancy a top 4 finish and played their best team to achieve that ..and we helped them towards that...if we had jumped them would we have had the same ambition ?..at present we will look to be contented with a top 8/9 finish...to ensure a cup quarter final win ......we're better than that... IMO... -

That doesn't make it a realistic ambition of theirs does it?
Given our start to the season, had we have won last night, that fact that we'd have been realistic about not going on to get fourth is nothing more than what it is, factual realism.
We are better than that as you say, well, we are now, now we've got some players back in for the ones we sold. But we didn't have those at the start of the season.
