not with any certainty ogv, 2^11 -1= 2047 which is divisable by 23 and 89, so although there is the possibilty that it would be prime the rule does not apply to all prime numbers(however it is probably the best method we have for testing for prime numbers). -

Posts: 2,158February 7 I imagine the people working on the GIMPS project are trying to figure that out, one things for sure and that is cleverer people than me have tried and failed to come up with a foolproof method of calculating primes. We don't fully understand them and its unlikely that we will any time soon. 57,885,161 is a relatively small number and there are a lot of prime numbers to test in between that and our new largest prime, good luck to them I say.

Hard to apply when we don't fully understand them, however we use them in encryption and psuedorandom number generators. -
