Lord Birkenhead...

Probably bore you to tears here, but this guy was born in Birkenhead and educated in Southport.  He was responsible for the Law of Property Act 1925 which pretty much governs my working life.

Anyway, he was a drinker and carouser.  A real character and Winston Churchill's best mate.  When in Court he liked to play the divil.  I think this exchange with a judge was pretty amusing:

Judge Willis: "Mr Smith, have you ever heard of a saying by Bacon-the great Bacon-that youth and discretion are ill-wedded companions?"
F.E.: "Yes, I have. And have you ever heard of a saying of Bacon-the great Bacon-that a much-talking judge is like an ill-tuned cymbal?"
Judge Willis: "You are extremely offensive, young man."
F.E.: "As a matter of fact, we both are; but I am trying to be, and you can't help it."
Judge Willis: "What do you suppose I am on the Bench for, Mr. Smith?"
F.E. "It is not for me, your honour, to attempt to fathom the inscrutable workings of Providence."

High Court judge presiding in a sodomy case: "Could you tell me what do you think one ought to give a man who allows himself to be buggered?"
F.E.: "Oh, thirty shillings or two pounds; whatever you happen to have on you." **

Smith (to witness): So, you were as drunk as a judge?
Judge (interjecting): You mean as drunk as a lord?
    Smith: Yes, My Lord.

    He was superb mate:

Judge: Are you trying to show contempt for this court, Mr Smith?
Smith: No, My Lord. I am attempting to conceal it.

Master of the Rolls: Really, Mr Smith, do give this Court credit for some little intelligence.
Smith: That is the mistake I made in the Court below, My Lord.

The original quote in this thread was in response to this exchange:

Judge:Poor boy - poor boy - blind. Put him on a chair so that the jury can see him.
Counsel:Perhaps your Honour would like to have the boy passed around the jury box.
Judge:That is a most improper remark.
Counsel:It was provoked by a most improper suggestion.

Judge:I have listened very carefully, Mr Smith, to what you have said, but I am none the wiser.
Counsel:None the wiser, perhaps, my Lord, but far better informed.

Just caught up with this one. Lord Birkenhead was brilliantly played by Nigel Davenport in Chariots of Fire. It was largely filmed on Merseyside. Woodside Ferry became Dover, and the Belfast boat I believe became the Cross-Channel Ferry. So,
    Birkenhead in Birkenhead.

Another anecdote. He was not a member of the exclusive Atheneum Club in London, but used to use the Gents there on the way to Parliament. They got fed up with this...

Steward: Are you a member of this club, Lord Birkenhead?
Birkenhead: Oh, is it a club as well?
