    awe inspiring that, like

I still think with all the draws that should've been wins though, winning it all is highly unlikely. I will agree with we should be ahead of Chelsea though. could've should've would've

My point is more than anything mate, people seem HAPPY to try and grab 4th. FLUCK that, we should be aiming for 3rd. AND next season i don't want any crap excuses for not going close in the league. Another year older, anotehr year wiser, and POTENTIALLY a stronger squad when we sell Fellaini. WE HAVE NO EXCUSE!

I agree. You may recall me making the point many times on here that I couldn't figure out how Man Utd came within 30 seconds of winning the Premier League last sason - because their team, last season (especially without Vidic) were no great shakes whatsoever. They were a poor enough team! And staring strongest 11 versus strongest starting 11, we have every bit as good a team as theirs (actually I think better - in the second half of the season anyway). I've made the point many times that if you put the Man Utd players in Everton shirts and the Everton players in Man Utd shirts, the result would have been the same - Man Utd would have been winning the title or at least getting very close to it and Everton would have been scrapping around 4th, 5th, 6th.

    But why?

IMO, the expectation of and around the club is one reason for it.
The referees constantly favouring them is another.
And Alex Ferguson is the biggest reason for it!

Would Moyes and the aura around Everton have carried that group of players to within 30 seconds of the title?

    Not on your Nelly!!

    is exactly right mate.......

we bottled it at wembley last season cause we don't have that winning mentality to win the really big game (Moyes as much as the players).......Fergie makes sure all his players have it, and if they don't they're out the door again.......favourable refs also help though......

when we win an FA Cup, then maybe we can start thinking about bigger things........and this season we're definately (with a bit of luck) good enough to win it...........Question is, do we have the bottle to win it.......

I think the depth of the Utd squad (or most of the top four/five contenders) is the major deciding factor - us Evertonians are constantly praying we don't get injuries.. ...then hoping for early returns from injuries when we get them. The Utd's and City's can cope. So much as I'd love to see us at the top - it ain't happening just yet.

As for a winning mentality - think some of the fans should have it drummed into them too. The last match I was at it was quite tangible the feeling of dread that we would lose.

Thing is though we SHOULD be round 3rd place looking to get to 2nd or maybe being a bit delusional but 1st. We've been extremely unlucky in terms of some of the decisions, a couple really stand out, newcastle at home we were robbed of 2 points, reading away we had two clear pens turned down, 3 points gone, Arsenal at home 2 points from artetas tackle that was a pen. The soft pen given against us at City, was a 50/50 and may not of been given if it was one of our players. So that's a definite 7 points gone and a possibility of 9 we could of had which would see us to 3rd with 46 points, then we have some perfomances to blame. e.g Fulham away conceding a poor last minute equaliser, same with Norwich at home, last week against Swansea, QPR away (although we did have 10 men from a soft red card), Wigan away, matched up with consistent injury problems for two players who looked promising, one doing consistantly well and having an unbeaten streak for us, helping us control the midfield, the other bringing balance to the wings and stopping other teams just piling in to our left side as well as getting what could be a decent partnership going with seamus coleman, also there is the problem of the size of our squad, we have 1 out and out striker, his cover being a striker that is in form but has been hated on for years by most fans for laziness etc, an unproven player who is being played out of position and becoming the new scapegoat and youth players, our midfield is not the best and we are lacking proper CMs, we have no backup GK to keep howard on his toes. And something that goes unnoticed is the age of our squad, it goes something like..

      33
    24-30-35-28
    24-36-31-30
         25
         27
In the next 3 years we're going to have to replace a midfielder or 2 a centreback, possibly our leftback (or cover for Oviedo) a left midfielder (Or again cover for the position), in order to keep ourselves mobile and not look like the retirement home for professionals desperate for one last go in the prem.

depends on how you approach it who the competitor is, Spurs or the one holding the no. 1 spot. Well, I say Spurs only got one point. It's in our favor. Toffees still going strong. COYB NSNO.
