Why do players prefer to go to the big clubs?

I ask this especially for soccer. I see players transfer to ManU, or City and just sit on the bench and hardly ever see playing time. I remember like 2 years ago hearing about Sturridge this and that and I never see him on the pitch. I understand the hype surrounding the bigger clubs with winning and Europe and all. But what's the point if you don't even get to get involved and help? Is it more money I assume? I'd rather be playing than riding the pine, in any sport.

It's a job to a lot of players, a lot of the them come from **** poor countries so you can't really blame them for having motives other than a love of the game. Who wouldn't want to get paid a fortune for turning up to training.

More chance of a trophy to put on your cv.

Look at owen bragging about what he won at utd, never played a real part but was elegable to a medal.

    Its money mainly,though.

Sturridge has took a pay cut apparently,as did Arteta.

Deus Ex has made a very good point there with Benoit Assou Ekotto being a prime example. He said a couple seasons ago that he doesn't like football and see's it only as a job and other players will be the same so will go to the team who pays th most. Obviously there are players like Kevin Davies, Ossie, Hibbert etc who will stay because they love the club but they're rare now.

I do think some of these players actually genuinely believe they will go to a club like Man Utd and make a significant impact - someone has to.

But most of it is for the money!

Money, and marketing money not just the wages.

Rooney for example, made a hell of a lot of cash in image rights during the Euro's while at Everton.

He now earns that every year, all year round, from Man United's global fanbase.

Howdy, Stranger!
