Best theory I've heard about black holes is that they are really a sort for of space censorship imposed on base civilisations by those that are more advanced.
The just sit there, blocking our view of the really interesting stuff so as not to confuse us too much.

See now I have a different theory. I reckon they are there because if they weren't then something different would happen. Also, they are not black. -
