I've never liked that line. It's a bit like a boxer thanking God for his victory. Inappropriate.

I do think it shows Bono's true colours.

ps - Sorry, it's just that Christmas season is upon us so the old "classics" are being rolled out.

It might not be in the spirit of Christmas. But lets be fair, it is something of a relief.

Assuming that it has to be a case of either or...

I didn't wish to dig into the history of the song. Perhaps if I rephrased it such that it is appropriate that Bono sang that particular line?

Never saw anything wrong with the line - the song is supposed to stir you into shelling out dosh, not make you go dancing around the christmas tree, get you dreaming of a white Christmas or wish you to be smply having a wonderful Christmas time....like!

It is indeed quite possible. I haven't tested that particular hypothesis but shall do so forthwith.

    I agree mate.

I think the line is there to trick people's minds into thinking how lucky we are and to help out, rather that it is wishing any bad on to anyone.

The song certainly has its fair share of critics. One famous musician went as far as to say, "I'm not afraid to say that I think Band Aid was diabolical. Or to say that I think Bob Geldof is a nauseating character. Many people find that very unsettling, but I'll say it as loud as anyone wants me to. In the first instance the record itself was absolutely tuneless. One can have great concern for the people of Ethiopia, but it's another thing to inflict daily torture on the people of Great Britain. It was an awful record considering the mass of talent involved. And it wasn't done shyly it was the most self-righteous platform ever in the history of popular music."
