Thailand (and Chang)

Possibly been mentioned before - but I was in Thailand this week just gone (Bangkok, Phuket town and Patong) and I saw no Everton shirts on sale (real or fake), saw more locals wearing West Ham shirts than Everton (2v1).  I have to admit I saw plenty of Chang ads promoting football... but they used Real Madrid and Barcelona to promote the brand (who Chang are now sponsors of both) in their ads (and on their bottled water).

If there is a Strategy to our Chang sponsorship outside of money (and even that is not amazing by any stretch) then it is failing spectacularly.

I live in thailand and have been  for the past 5 years, football and thai people, well they dont really know who they are wearing, and thai people change their teams often, yes you get your die hards, Man U, RS, and Everton fan clubs (bluesBlood), but over the last 5 years or so i have seen Chelsae (and now) Man city.

Fake shrits are everywhere, i guess you were not looking in the right places, just off kosan Rd there is a lady that sale grade 'A' copies and  factory shirts, alone sukhumvit Rd, next to a sky trian station there is a shop and small stall which sale copies but no makers on the shirt. However it's hard to find real shirt of any sort, you'd have to go to a (The) Mall, MBK, Central would etc etc.. but even then you'd only find Man u/city, liverpool and chelsea, generally you have to win the title to make it in thailand.

As for Evertonians, there are about 200-300 fans in Bangkok (BKK), and often have football meeting, i was with them for the FA Cup and we had a large indoor area and free beer, and i have been to BKK   3 or 4 times to see a game with them. When Everton came to Thailand i was given a free ticket too. these are die hards, and spend lots of money tring to get real stuff, shrits, flag etc...(http://www.bluesblood.com/bb/index.php).

as for Chang Beer, there are some ad's with Everton, mostly on the local stations 3 and 7, but for their Can beer is Real and Barca.
Hope this has helped. and you enjoyed your time over here.

I live  in Bkk too....There is virtually no coverage of Everton in any way shape or form.  They massively promote the likes of Man U Chelsea..et al....They also promote Liverpool a lot more than they do us.  We should **** them off asap..And yes...I agree...Thai fans change their team like they change their underpants.

how long have you lived here?

if you're here for a long time, you should check out Bluesblood (if you have not already). we do have a good fan club here.

And once we win the league this year (5555+) we'll be all over thailand

It was my 3rd time in BKK this year - it's only 2 and a bit hours away from Hong Kong.  I only started looking at copy shirts in Patong TBH.  I am interested in the grade a copies, not for everton shirts, but more for some 'exotic' teams for my nephews can you pm me the address?

In Bkk where do you go to watch the matches?  I ended up watching the derby in the clubhouse, out of desperation!

Is sponsoring any team truly worthwhile, OGV?

I feel the asian market, whilst huge, is also fickle.  Success in asia (certainly Hong Kong, China, and from what I have seen Thailand) brings fans - end of (wearing red also helps).

unless its promoting the team then can't see that much point to sponsorship. Barca were known for years for not doing it. Maybe worth the credibility and publicity for a club like Everton to just promote something worthwhile on their shirts. I still think its weird we are paying for shirts and then providing free adverts for companies I don't give a sh it about. They should pay me for the ad revenue. although I havent bought a shirt for years

when Chelsea were on the up and coming, about the time they won their 1st title in x many years, many tha'si would shout Chelsea at me when i was wearing my blue everton shrit, some still do, i just gave/give them a dirty look and educate them about the real blue team.
but really, to have a popular club over there you really need to win something. that's why most of the Everton fan club out here are 33+ years old, but there are good bunch of lad and ladies, and they get a buzz out of Evertonian from England, and they put there money in, spending a lot on getting real shirts from Goodison, about 70-80 pounds per shirt i think it is with P&P and Thai Tax.

One thing that did really pi$$ me off, was when i went to watch the FA cup. some guy from the UK embassy was invited along by Chang beer, and was given a signed Everton shirt, the guy was a WBA fan, i tried to ask him to put it into a raffle the bluesblood (everton fan club in thailand) had going, to rise funs for other meets, but he wasn't having it. He prob sold it on Ebay.
