One of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Chavez isn't perfect, but he's the best that Venezuela has had.  He does try and redistribute wealth from the top, allow redistribution of land to those with none to start communal farm projects.

There is really high crime, in part due to the drugs routes to the US, and of course poverty.  However poverty has something like halved under Chavez' rule, which must be seen by anyone (who isn't a Tory) as being a good thing.

His flaws?  There are allegations of nepotism, there is a lot of corruption within the government, and he doesn't deal with criticism well.  However, if I was a  man who had an American senator request my assassination, I would be really short on trust.  I would want the people around me to be trustworthy.

South America has for too long been the playground of the US and the culture of revolution, coup, military might and corruption have been far too long engendered to be easily overthrown.  Chavez is the start of that process, and one which is now a fairly fair democratic one.

Oh and to add, this is far from isolated, Argentina, Bolivia and others now have very left leaning governments, trying to repair the damage done.  South America has many flaws, and to suggest someone effs off over there for admiring it, is just ignorant.  A westerner over there is a good prize for a ransom.

However, the whole region is making progress.  Brazil's economy is rampant, and there could be a real surge from that part of the world in the international markets.

To write them off as all backward criminals is just typical of the US led neo-con crap.

All the people on here who criticise Chavez usually know nothing about the real meaning of democracy and swallow completely the myth given out by Sky and the Sun and the corrupt British media that Britain is a 'democracy'. How utterly naive; do you really think putting a cross on a ballot paper every 4 years in a representative democracy is 'democratic'? When was the last time you made any form of political decision ? In Venezuela there are regular meetings of local people who discuss their needs and have a voice. Unlike you. At least accept you are ignorant and don't insult people who dare to think differently. Embarrassing that some Everton fans are like this.

Wow, let's make a sweeping statement without actually knowing what people's opinions are of this country.

I don't agree so therefore I read the sun ?

If you think that the Venezuelan people have a voice in anything in that country then you are as ignorant as the people you talk about, get your head out of the sand and see what standard of living the working class have there.

As I said, but was conveniently ignored, the standards of the poor have increased dramatically over the past ten years.  No, it's not great, but it's getting better.

It's odd that you think there was no voice of the working classes. there was an 85% turnout for the election.  Venezuela has massive problems, but none that weren't there ten years ago.  To just write if off as hopeless is exactly what has been wrong for a long time, the situation is improving.

Our democracy is hugely flawed, and, strictly speaking, it's more a democratic oligarchy, as is Venezuela's.  At least the latter has more effective close links with local issues however.

That Chavez pisses off the US right is generally a sign he's doing something right!

I like Mavis. Albeit rather left-wing he explains his view calmly and will consider your rebuttal.

Knoxy just covers his ears, links a boring_as_fuck 50 page essay that is irrelevant to your reply and calls you ignorant.
