Growing up supporting a team that have a history of being succesfull is always the easy option. Supporting a team that have come close on many occasions but have only tasted success 61 years ago is difficult. Years and years ago players played for the team from the area in which they were born. Family and friends were filled with pride watching the local boy doing his best for the local team, this pride extended beyond friends and family it included neighbours, local business people, school kids the community.
This has left football but it is alive in Gaelic Football. My son is folowing in my footsteps, he supports Mayo like I did with my late father. He has attended matches experiencing defeat and loss but never achieving the Holy Grail. Its a hard road filled so much of promise and heartbreak, three generations of attending matches but no reward.
People often question our reasons for constantly going through the hardship of defeat but what they dont realise is that we want to be the ones to be known as the ones who have tasted success. The ones that have stuck with it, believed in our team and regardless of the critics we have faith
People ask me why I support Everton ? Well even though I have seen success I have seen the hard years but when you are born to support a team nothing will change that.
My local team, made up of amateur players, training like professionals, will take to the field on 23/09/12 like they did in 1989, 1996, 1997,2004,2006 and do thier best to make their family, friends, neighbours and community proud.
They will do their best to achieve what they havent since 1951 and leave a county in a state of europhea.
