Pre season fixtures

Seen complaints on here that Everton FC shouldn't go abroad to play their pre seasons fixtures. I would rather questions the strength of the opponents we are choosing for our pre season matches. Why not go for stronger teams? Morecambe, Dundee United, Motherwell, Blackpool, AEK Athens and Malaga are not directly any top teams in Europe. If we want to get in to Europe and hopefully do well there why don't Everton choose to play some of the pre season matches against stronger teams that are doing OK in Europe, teams like AZ, Valencia, Hanover, Sporting? By doing this we would get experience playing at a higher level. I think it would also be a better way to prepare for the league, getting the team match fit. It is not only this season that we play second rated teams, we do that every pre season. OK, we did play Valencia last year but besides that the tams we play in pre season are not very frightening. Can it be the reason why we start our seasons so badly year after year?

Problems with playing per-season friendlies is that you never know how it's going to effect the season, we could play higher end clubs and get beat 3-0 each game and have a storming season, but on the other hand, we could play lower end clubs and win ever game and have a shocker.

the main aim to per-season is getting the fitness up. Playing competitive games does help (which was why we were in a tournament), however it is not the main focus. If games are to competitive you may find yourself with injured players leading up to the start of the season.

per-season should go a little like this:-
    fitness,
    team cohesion,
match practice (normally with a big game leading into the start of the season 1 or 2 weeks before the start).

The pre-season teams are chosen for their style of play, in order to gain experience against different tactics and qualities. They will choose teams that are great defensively in a 4-4-2, teams that are strong in attack in a 4-3-3, etc etc, they dont pick them on overall quality, but on the quality of their respective areas to test certain members of the team. THere is no point playing teams that while they look great, do not represeent any style of play that is likely to be met in the Premier league.

The idea to me is to mix the teams. Some easy opponents in the beginning of the pre-season to get back in to playing football again. Then to go up against the better teams to really test team and tactics. Just before the start of the season you can go back to play easier opponent to gain confidence.

What annoys me is our transfer activity. We often sell players late august when the season has begun and buy replacements who are then expected to make a flying start.

Wish we set our own deadline for transfers so we had an idea of what team we will have available for the start of the season.

Looking at the team now it looks decent but until deadline day on September 1st I won't be happy,
