I would just like to draw everyones attention to the fact that we did sell Pienaar in January and he was not replaced.
Pienaar is a left winger and coincidently so is Drenthe.
Therefore Arteta is so far NOT replaced.
Thanks.. now I've got that off my chest :)

Arteta doesn't play anywhere we haven't got players for, and has played worse than most in those positions of late.  Drenthe replaces Pienaar and then some, he's twice as fast and has twice the hair!

Of course we have players to play where Arteta played but if what your saying is the case then why even have a squad? We might as well just choose 11 players and fingers crossed we'll do well.
We have a lot of games ahead of us and the players who can play in Artetas position will get tired or injured as Arteta did last season but who will replace them when they do?

    Osman,rodwell,Barklay,Drenthe,Fellaini,Cahill,Heitinga,Baxter,Wallace.

Arteta palyed 1 good game last season and that was on the left of midfield.

    Drenthe will hopefully surpass that

My point was we didn't have anyone to play on the left.  Now we do.  So from having lots of players for the centre and nominally the right, we have one less and now have gone from 0 to 1 on the left.  A more balanced squad.

Coleman was in the midfield as well.... I like this signing, hopefully Real Madrid are looking to offload him but I doubt it. Drenthe is insanely quick and gladly takes his opportunities when given space. I haven't seen much of him but what I have seen he will certainly fill in when needed because of his versatility.

Yes I have to agree with you crusty... left mid was a bigger priority to us than the centre. I actually don't think we'll miss him all that much, he played like a crab of late which annoyed the hell out of me but the reason for this thread is due to the fact that so many people are saying the board done well, we replaced Arteta with Drenthe forgetting the fact that Pienaar left wit hno replacement.
I beleive we have enough quality in the youngsters to step into Artetas shoes but it doesn't aid the fact that our small squad is now smaller thanks to the incompetant board yet again.

I reckon Ross Barkley replaces Arteta long term..... So yeah he is replaced.

Coincidently, Barkley seems to give the team that little extra something that Arteta used to do.

Yes, its raw talent right now but once the edges have been smoothed out, we will see something better than Arteta could give.  Lets not forget Coleman is to come back from injury....

I don't care who he replaces as long as Arteta is off the wage bill.

So Barkley is like a new signing I guess??? Sorry I couldn't resist the pun!

Barkley has already played better this season than Arteta has in any match in the last year.  Arteta suffers from the same thing that pienaar did and cahill does - too often he is "almost great".

Agreed but getting rid of him at 10m with no replacement isn't the answer.

I think the answer already exists.  Barkley/Cahill/Felliani/Rodwell/Etc... show pretty strong depth in center mid.  We needed a permanent left wing is we arent going to play Billy in that position (which is a pity, imo).

The problem we have had for the last year is the lack of scoring pressure.  I prefer we add the striker in place of Arteta and put stronger ball control in the middle.  Barkley and Rodwell/Felliani would be my preference.

If Drenthe is as good as he could as he could be, then he will link up well with Baines, Barkley will replace Arteta, we have a strong midfeild without Arteta, he's been missing for over a year anyway, im glad he's off the wage, he's 30 in 6 months and has an injury once a season, im not really that arsed he's gone

We have replacements for Arteta, but they never got a game however bad his form was.

    Bily, Osman.

Plus, we now have Barkley to play in the middle, how is that a bad thing?

Exactley, he would come back from injury and walk straight back in to the first team even though he was playin crap, just like Baines taking the freekicks an corners an nearly everytime makes does something with it, then Arteta comes in an he's first on the ball hitting the first man again

The Arteta of 2007 has gone, we luckily had his best years, and I thank him for all the good days we got from him but like he said it was the right time for him, it was also the right time for us

Is it true that Drenthe held the Everton shirt in the air as if he couldn't care less about being at the club?
