M.Arteta v A.Ball

I remember as a young boy l was devastated when Alan Ball was sold to Arsenal. I am just as sad to learn that Arteta was sold yesterday in a similar fashion.
As a footbal fan l'm very sad, however on a point of business for the club, it seems like good business. Although we only got £10m for Mikel, at the end of the year with wages, this would equate to another £4m. He's 29, although still a brilliant player, one more year at Everton, and we would not have received more than £3m - like Piennar.
And what if he got injured??
Everton is losing £5m every year these days, if we can't make up the shortfall from ticket sales, then we have to make profits from players to keep the club going. the CLUB is more important than anything! Views pls?

Point is that we made £8m profit on Arteta. I know we lost money on Yakubu, but Everton MUST make profits to cover the shortfall to stay in business. Football is a business at the end of the day, and like all business's - they need to make profits.
I think Moyes has a good balance between finding good players and making money for the club as well.

I love the utter wall of ignorance that is the response to the sensible posts on here, that or rabid bile about you not being a true blue and not wanting the moon on a stick.

Good points and well made, for what it's worth I agree.  As an aside, did we not do better the year Ball left?  My history that far back is ropey.

im sorry, but to put Mikel Arteta in the same breath as Alan Ball, how dare you. Its an opinion, and your entitled to yours, but believe me having seen them both at their best, Mikel doesnt come close. Mikel did a great job for us, when he was at his best and at times was a joy to watch, but AJB did it every game for Everton, i cried my eyes out when AJB left, but Arteta is just another Pieanaar, sad hes gone but there ya go, move on............

I agree........ Arteta shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Paul Bracewell, let alone Alan Ball.

On his day, Mikel was very good to watch..... on his day though.  Looking back on his career with us, he has been very inconsistent.

I'm not comparing them skill wise. Alan Ball was like deity - a God! I am merely comparing transfer circumstances and my emotions.

I still wouldn't put his departure in the same category myself...... Can't really compare it myself as Ball was before my time but i can only imagine.  Think Deso, Howie and 1ceablue can back this up.....

I was heartbroken when Lineker left, fuming when Kanchelskis was sold, but strangely Mikel doesn't compare to even them and they only played for our club for a season.

His departure compares to when Gravesen left...... ' Ahhh well, thanks and good luck '.

So right mate, difficult to understand why the emotion was so great for the lad. Think i was more emotional thinking how you were, over there with IRENE. Hope all is well and safe mate......... ;-)

Ball leaving would've been a bigger loss but that was before my time.

I was more upset when Bally left He was my hero and was brillian. l'm not that bothered about Arteta going. I liked him and think he was a good player for us but we've had the best out of him I think and don't think he would done much better for us. I wish him the best tho

I think you've hit the nail on the head. When Ball left ( regular England international, world class player, world cup winner, scourge of the RS ) it was like a sudden death in the family and I was in tears. Arteta is not even close to being in the same class. He was once a very good player for us but he lost it when he went onto his big salary. He would have only gone further downhill from now on and his value disappear. Would he have got into the sides of 63, 69, mid 80's ? Not in my opinion. I always liked Mikel, but hey it's time for him to move on. My only upset is his timing of his wantaway.........

Same with me when dixie left us, gutted, i knew we would never get a 60 goal a season guy again, not for that kind of money anyways.
