Great debate people...from my point of view it's not politcally motivated just pure opportunism and thuggery. These people are not politically motivated at all. They are people who have nothing and live in a world that they just don't feel they belong in - no prospects - no community - no proper family - no money - no hope.......who's fault is this ? God knows!! They have to take responsibility for their actions and its down the politcal masters to sort out why they felt the need to do it? Probably an easy question to answer and I'm sure community leaders will be telling them exactly how to tackle it ......but to try and address/solve these issues is never going to be easy ................one encouraging sign though is that it seems the right minded responsible people seem to be determine to clean up the mess and get on with it..................................The most disturbing aspect is that there are reports of 8 year olds out on the streets looting......................8 year olds!! Beggars belief.............All I'd say is good luck to those picking up the pieces!!

One final point - Terresa May needs to be replaced ...I have never seen/heard a weaker Home Secretary in my life time......and if she say "Criminality" one more time I think I might have to call her and have a word..............she talks about not brushing the crimes under the carpet and actively seeking justice........fine.........but then in the same breathe refuses to be drawn on WHY these people did this and HOW she is going to stop it happening again tonight...........I think I might explode with rage at her!

I think this is about right, all my point was is that these events, along with protests, seemed to mirror what was going on during Thatcher's Britain and didn't really want to go into the depths that this debate has but it's definitely brought about some interesting points, but I think this one is the best point.

So you're saying, that the LHC was a waste of money and that all this time the Higgs Bosun particle was hiding in a branch of Argos in Tottenham?

Couldn't agree with you more there Fozzster - that interview she gave (the one I saw on Sky anyway) was one of the most inept, spineless and genuinely frightening interview I've seen with a politician in my life. No wonder the rioters are thinking they are untouchable.

I'm not backpedaling, I stand by my original statement that THESE EVENTS WERE HAPPENING DURING THATCHER'S REIGN AND HAPPENING AGAIN DURING HER LOVECHILD'S REIGN! BUT I know these riots are NOT politically motivated as they were in the 80s.

F***in' finally the penny drops! Me an' Scott are still waitin' for our research grant to come through from BBSRC - we've made somethin' similar to the LHC out of old bog rolls like. Fraction of the cost mind...

In relation to the riots, yes. Everything else that I mentioned though, is down to the Tories. But it does sound so similar, from the stories I've heard, to what life must have been like for the working classes, especially Scousers and obviously the likes of the Welsh and Scots, under Thatcher.

From the things I've heard and the footage and images I've seen, it is quite eerie as to how much events over the last year, especially over the last few nights, really do seem to echo Thatcher's Britain..... What does everyone think?? This isn't a dig at the Tories, but you look at the evidence and it doesn't take a genius to realise that these are dark days we are living in, and did you honestly see anything as bad as this when Labour were in power?

Riots, Protests, Liverpool weakening under the Tories, rich getting richer while the poor get poorer...... I'm sorry but these are facts we must face! For shame......

For Christs sake Andy it's time you grew up over this. This is a case of scumbags going on a looting spree and burning the businesses and homes of ordinary people, it's not a protest, there are no political issues, it's pure opportunism by people who do not know right from wrong. Most of these scumbags grew up as children of Blair and Brown, but I wouldn't blame them, these are feral scumbags who would rob you of your wheelchair given the chance. You do yourself down by your one sided view of the world........

Andy, Thatcher's era was decades ago. You cannot keep harkening back to it as a cause of all the country's problems when Labour had ample time to put the 'damage' (as you see it ) right when they were in power.. Every Government has had riots and periods of unrest, picking this as an excuse to berate a regime of over 20 years ago is incredibly weak, in my opinion.

well when the tory shoite are in power, investment north of watford goes to pot, services are cut , policing is reduced and they are also making soldiers redundant, maybe send them in a good size 12 paras boot in the right place will put off a few of these looters, the police are to scared of the pc morons who accuse them of over reaction and heavy handidness, get stuck into the thugs. :-)

1ceablue, I am aware that these riots are nothing to do with politcs, protests etc (Although maybe a very small minority MAYBE) BUT you saw what was going on in the 80s, Toxteth, Brixton, Protests etc...... Are you telling me this isn't happening now? In the last 12 or so months? This is my point, we're experiencing similar events now. I wonder if I'm imagining seeing these riots and the protests from earlier in the year, and Liverpool weakening again under Tories..... I'm not pinning all blame on them, I'm simply stating that this is what was happening back in the 80s, a simple observation. Unless someone was lying when they were telling me about the poll tax riots, Brixton and Toxteth riots and the strikes......

The police are "damned if the do and damned if the don't" .........they can't win can they? It needs leadership and lots of it ....we're getting none at the moment ................to be fair to them over the last few days there is no way they could predict where these things were going to kick off........also seemed that although random - these attacks had some planning .....setting fire to buildings so police resource and fire service have to deal with immediate danger of the fire and then moving on to looting in other areas knowing that the resource was being used to protect community from large fires.

Having said all that - still find it difficult to understand why they have in some circumstances been not engaging smaller groups of looters? Most of them by all accounts have been kids/teenagers?? Resource problems?
