Brains V Ability

I have just been reading on the Drenthe thread that whilst most people acknowledge his ability on the ball there are question marks about his "football brain" and It has got me thinking. . . . .

Which is easier to teach and get the all round footballer?

    a) A player with super ability but poor "football brain"

    b) A really tactically aware and astute player but who lacks the higher level of football skills.

In this day and age I think you really need both, but from what i've seen from the scouting of kids they will pick up a lot of kids who are physically capable and then try to teach them.

same sceanrio with beckford, he got 10 goals in his first season but was woeful in other areas of his game, instead of keeping him Moyes decided to get rid.

Same could happen with drenthe, he looks like he can get sent off at any time

We got Beckford on a free and sold him for 4 million? I think. You could see he had the potential to score goals anywhere but at his best his all round game is of championship quality
