Enforcement of U.S. laws against marijuana possession serves to encourage and enrich Mexican drug cartels and the Asian and biker gangs that control the “B.C. Bud” market in Canada, according to two former top federal law enforcement officials.

“It is the money, not the drug, that drives these cartels and gangs,” Charles Mandigo, who served 27 years with the FBI and headed its Seattle office, told a legislative hearing in Olympia.

He was testifying in favor of Initiative 502, which would legalize the growth and possession of cannabis, tax it, sell-it at state-sanctioned stores, and give the State Liquor Control Board authority over it.

John McKay, who served as U.S. Attorney for Western Washington from 2001 to 2007, said I-502 is an antidote to a “tremendously failed national policy and a tremendously failed state policy on marijuana.

“Criminal enforcement of marijuana doesn’t work,” McKay argued.  It “creates an enormous flow of money to international drug cartels, criminals and thugs,”

Does anyone agree' What are your views couldn't resist right am off nite lads

solve the vast amount of financial problems in the world, legalize drugs. think of all the extra money brought in through tax etc. why let all that money go in to the wrongs hands. you cant beat them so legalize it.

Well, speaking from my point of view, if they legalised drugs tomorrow, I'd be a health risk!

3000 quid to treat an alcoholic in the Windsor clinic at Fazak Hospital. They have to go or they get their extra benefits stopped, straight back on the ale afterwards.

I think alcohol is far worse than drugs, nobody ever went out smoking half a dozen joints then kicked the living daylights out of someone for spilling their drink or looking at their girlfriend.

    I agree with Snowy here.

Back in the day, like late teens early 20's, after a skinful, beer head took over, end up falling out with people for nothing, fighting, carrying on.

Get me on the e's. i just wanted to hug everyone and tell them i love them.

They should hand them out before football matches imo.

On a serious note though, I agree that alcohol is a massive problem, but its the one that got away, like smoking.

I was only partly being flippant about being a health risk if they legalised drugs. At present they are taboo; and I might consider ignoring the law of the land, but in reality for me to go and buy them would mean digging up very old contacts... because nobody I know now takes drugs, so they're not readily available.  Make 'em legal and there's a hell of a lot of people that would all of a sudden have more than drink and ciggies to entertain them.

personally i wouldnt do it now. i think if you have a sensible head on your shoulders and you do it in moderation, then there isnt a problem. however, there is always the daft ones who have to go ott with it.

And that's the problem isn't it. That minority of feckin eejits that spoil it for the rest of us.

Lot to be said for increasing the age limit for drinking. Like you said, you're less likely to get in a fight now etc.

As it happens, I'm not actually anti-drugs. I would legalise them, but there would have to be a real shift in thinking in this country.

This **** is addictive i have never had facebook or twatter they are both **** but i love this blueroom. I will admit i use cannabis and i am not proud of it but i been smoking for bout ten years i have always worked to fund my addiction an over the years i have dipped up an down an now it a ritual for me.I am down to one a night before bed considering my habit over 20 quid a day so i am happy soon i will be off it i hope but i think by the government doing this would cut crime an save a lot of money.Look at Holland great country chilled out people i first visited when we beat AZ ALKMAR great few nights.I agree with snowy alcohol is far bigger problem not only to ourself but to the taxpayer.     .

Good to see this, some decent discussions on the BR lately, BBD may not be the most articulate poster but his posts have prompted some discussion and some good fun. Gonna be a good addition to the place this lad.

If you take away the criminality, in many ways the taboo is lifted and people will engage in more meaningful discussion...
