tyhe big difference for me is the expectation level..back then it was survival....now it's finish top 6 !!

puts a different perspective on the comparisons !!!

I think you'd fairly struggle to find a single Evertonian that expects to finish in the top 6 next season without significant investment! 6th is now the long shot that 4th used to be!

agree at this moment in time..however asked at the beginning of the season i rather think you'd have gotten a differetn answer !!

But I said next season - which hasn't started. And I don't think I would get a different answer - for next season!

yes you did mate for the statement re next season ..but the original post was about the HERE & NOW !! compared to 2002 ..which is what i was answering you with !!

whatever about expectations in the league....i think the shlt will really hit the fan (no pun intended) if we lose to fulham on friday night.....right now, not only is the team of 2012 not good enough, its not entertaining the Goodison crowd either........

we have a far better squad of players now than back in 2002. i can't beleive a lot of people are saying there isn't much difference in the players back then compared to now. there is a very big difference. our back 5 is miles better than it was back then. howard, distin, jags, baines are all quality players. heitinga is good back up and hibbert, neville and coleman are all good right backs. no defender or keeper from 2002 would get in the 2012 team (obviously discounting hibbert).
at the moment in centre mid we have a choice of fellani, rodwell, barkley, gibson, osman, cahill. thats a hell of a lot of talent in the middle. carsely and gravesen were both good players but i cant see them getting a game in the 2012 team. and the strengh in depth of the 2012 centre midfield completely blows away the competition from the 2002 team.
out wide we are not very strong in 2012 but i'd take drenthe and coleman over ginola, blongvist, gemmil and alexanderson any day of the week. those 4 players from 2002 would not be able to cope in the premier league these days - they are awful players. ginola was totally finished at everton as was the once decent blomvist. gemmil was an average player and alexanderson was one of the worst i've seen in an everton shirt. those 4 players wouldnt get near the 2012 squad never mind the starting line up.
And that leaves the strikers. we were probably a bit better off in the striking department back in 2002 but an ageing ferguson and campbell plus a half decent radzinki wasn't anything to get excited about

we have a far better squad of players in 2012 than we did in 2002 but unfortunately the performances on the pitch are a carbon copy of 2002. this squad should be doing a lot better on the pitch but for some reason watching everton is exactly like it was back in 2002

I'm with you on this one Luke.....if we had finshed 9th or 10th for the last 3 or 4 years everyone would be thinking we can still push on now this season
