March 2002 Vs March 2012

Inspired by Mark Lawrensone's article this morning where he said Moyes is right back where he started 10 years ago, I thought I'd look at the squad then Vs the squad now

OK I know it's not March yet - but we know what the squad will be in March unless we HOPEFULLY get one new signing (hoping for 2 might be pushing it)

    March 2002
    ___________

    ...............Simonsen

    Watson....Stubbs...Weir....Pistone

    Gemmill....Carsley..Gravesen....Alexandersson

    .............Radzinski...Ferguson

    Gerrard
    Hibbert
    Naysmith
    Cleland
    Unsworth
    Osman
    Ginola
    Linderoth
    Pembridge
    Blomqvist
    Campbell

March 2012 (bar hopfully at least one signing)
    _______________________________________________

    .......................Howard

    Hibbert....Jagielka.....Distin....Baines

    Coleman.....Fellaini....Gibson...Drenthe
    .........Cahill
    ..............Saha

    Mucha
    Hahnemann
    Neville
    Heitinga
    Duffy
    McFadden
    Gueye
    Barkley
    Rodwell
    Osman
    Straq
    Vellios
    Anichebe
    Baxter
    McAleny

So is Mark Lawrsnson right? Not forgetting our debt in 2002 was around half what it is now (I think).

At first i though the current team is alot better......but when you think about, its probably much of a muchness now........3 seasons ago the players we had we're a massive improvement on the 2002 team......but now we have aging players playing without hunger & passion......

so on paper, todays team looks better....but sadly on grass they're both equally mediocre....

the 2002 team worked harder for Moyes....

Not even sure that today's team even looks better on paper, say what you like about Lawrenson but you have to admit he makes a very good and valid point here.

I have to agree with NSNO and escla - the two teams are much of a likeness.

A couple of our youngsters now are more promising than what we had back then, but seeing how they'll probably have to be sold off it is academic.

I'd like to think the potentiol of our current squad is greater than that of the old one, but current performances put them equal.

Well we had promising youngsters back then too, one that springs to mind is a chap called Rooney, do we have another Rooney ?
    Think not.

Two great dogs of war in the middle. Honest hard working team back then. Sad to say it but its hard to believe we have increased our debt so much, having sold so many players, yet have a team now that is **** all better.

    Not anyone near his level.

And I keep him out of the equation as he didn't appear on the team list in the original post.

I could be worng, but I don't think Rooney appeared in a matchday squad on or before Moye's first game!
That's why I left him out!

The similarities are the age in my book I think. I personally think if the work rate for this season was high this current team would be a far better side.

We've all seen the abilities our current squad bring to our team but why they havn't excelled in themselves this season. Not one bit

A month later, April 2002 he was on the bench for his premiership debut against Southamton.

i agree with him that we are ALMOST back to where we were 10 years ago, id have any of the forward players from back then though, radzinski, big dunc, campbell. after that i think we have better players in all the other positions.

I'd have Carsley and Gravesen over Gibson and Fellaini....

If you made a combined team from the 2, (hypothetically having the 2002 team being now the age they were then obviously), do you not find it's pretty much 50/50?

On the plus side for the team of today, the transfer value of today's team should be about 3 times more than the 2002 team at today's prices.

I think you'd fairly struggle to find a single Evertonian that expects to finish in the top 6 next season without significant investment! 6th is now the long shot that 4th used to be!

I think Luke makes a valid point. Our expectations are now much higher. Admittedly top 6 is a tad optimistic but its a position we did enjoy and one that we are smarting over not having a sniff of now.

But I said next season - which hasn't started. And I don't think I would get a different answer - for next season!
