Aston Villa exploring plan to bring in safe standing areas

    • Safe standing areas could be introduced to Premier League
    • Supporters of idea take lead from Bundesliga

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jan/19/villa-park-terraces

"The campaign for safe standing areas to be incorporated into top-level football grounds has received a major boost, after Aston Villa said they are examining introducing a standing section at Villa Park.

Paul Faulkner, Villa's chief executive, told a supporters' consultation group that he recognises fans want to stand, that safe standing areas could help improve the match atmosphere, allow for some cheaper ticket prices, and therefore attract younger supporters currently priced out by the cost of seats.

Faulkner has met the Football Supporters' Federation, which has long campaigned for a relaxation of the law compulsory requiring clubs in the top two divisions to have all-seating in their grounds."

65,000 or so was the biggest gate I have been to it was great in the end because every time there was a corner we would run/ be pushed up and down 10 yards ,nearly getting trampled on .Really couldn't understand why they stopped it
It was so packed that I could lift my feet off the floor without dropping ,unforgettable memories

    Bloody bullcrap idea...

Im fully behind Liverpool with the Hillsborough enquiry, the FA would never allow it especially will all the hassle with finding the truth etc....

Supporters would eventually take advantage of the situation and run riot again!!!

If standing is brought back to the stadiums, I can guarantee I will never go to a football match again. The idea of it is good, bring back an atmosphere, but to be honest, I'd rather be guaranteed of my safety and have no to little atmosphere than run the risk of being crushed, because you know this is what would happen. You'll get some idiot who'll cause a crush. Simple as.

You've got to consider those who would lose out if standing was brought back as well, small people and those in wheelchairs. Like I say, along with the risk of a crush, it's pretty much a non-starter.

It kind of went really well the standing thing, I mean, for over 100 years it went without a hitch. Then a gang of nomarks with no tickets rush some gates and crush their mates to death and suddenly its not safe to stand anymore? Just make the RS stay in seats and everyones happy.

I'm with km on this one, disagree with those who say it was safe. I can't remember a single game that I stood in and didn't have to be thrown on a barrier by my uncle or some random man just catching me before I was dragged down the length of the Glwadys street, went to about ten games there before my uncle decided he didn't want to explain to my ma why I had been injured going to the game.

no they wouldnt. they are separated within the standing area.

dont forget that most clubs in england are standing room stadiums. this hasnt changed.

"The most common argument is that standing is inherently unsafe. If that is the case, why is it allowed in Leagues One and Two? If standing was truly unsafe, it would be outlawed not only in the lower leagues, but at horseracing, rugby, motorsport and concerts (some of which are held in all-seater football stadiums). Our position is that if standing is safe in the lower leagues, then it must be safe in the top two divisions. We find the idea that safety is dependent upon the quality of football played on the pitch as absolutely absurd, and logically flawed.

Many opponents to standing mistakenly cite Hillsborough as a reason not to allow its introduction. Their argument is that a return to terraces means another Hillsborough disaster is inevitable. The tragic loss of lives in 1989 was not caused by standing; the Taylor Report primarily blamed the failure of police control. It did not ban standing, nor claim it was inherently unsafe. Furthermore, we are not calling for a reintroduction of terraces. Modern safe-standing areas in Germany feature convertible seats, with barriers between every row."

i think the areas behind the goals could be converted to safe standing areas, offering cheaper tickets, creating better atmosphere and without the risk posed by the old terraces.
