What players leaving goodison broke your hearts the most?

    Im prob not as old as a few ppl on here, but thought i would post this question to bring back memorys of some of the greats to have come and gone from our great club.
    Some on good terms with the fans and some still hated to this day.

    From my younger days......

    Trevor Steven,Gary Stevens
    ... both fantastic players who were members of my favourite ever everton squad in the 80s, both left to play for Rangers and began the end of a great era for Everton Football club.

    Gary Lineker
    ....Came and scored a **** load of goals then left to play in Europe. Was argubly one of the best strikers in the world at the time. True goal scorer if ever i saw one.

    Duncan Ferguson,
    Prob not as prolific as the rest of my list but a true Evertonian....played and gave 100% for the club. Always remember his goal against Man Utd beating them 1-0 and boy did he celebrate with passion. Left for Newcastle, did **** all then came home!!!

    Wayne Rooney,
    As much as people bag him and will deny wanting him to stay. He gave the new breed of youth coming through our wonderful accademy the will to succeed and forfil there dreams.
    Wonder goal at arsenal when we done them 2-1 comes to mind as a great memory.
    The day was always coming for him to leave but it was brilliant watching him wear our colours.

    Joeleen Lescott.....
    What a bargain of a gem we got when we signed him. Was the complete defender and scored goals. Thought he was a key player in us peforming well and qualifiying for europe.
    Some things were just meant to be and in came MR BAINES who in my humble opinion is one of the best left backs in britain.

    Steven Pineaar- Enjoyed watching him on the left wing linking up with Baines and even making the money rich clubs look second rate. Was a real work horse and really wish he showed some loyalty.

    Sure there are loads i have forgotten but thats were everyone else can refresh my memory!!!

    Agree with the team of the mid 80's. Would have loved to see them in the European Cup in 1986. They played excellent football and with what we have seen so far this season it makes it more painful.


    In the last 10 years I have not been too disappointed with any players leaving because it has been best for the club as well. Wish Rooney left on better terms because it would be nice for him to finish his career with us (if we ever start showing ambition).

    Duncan Ferguson was the saddest day of my life as an Evertonian, was absolutely devastated. 

    I suppose Rooney was one I was angry with because I was at the Youth game where he had the Once A Blue Always A Blue T-Shirt on, and I somehow felt cheated when he left. But no doubt about it, Dunc leaving was just horrible. I was in hospital at the time which didn't help matters either!

    I was 18 months old when i went to my first game in 1981, so i spent my childhood going to watch one of the best sides in Europe on a weekly basis. In that side of the Eighties there were many great players but there was only one constant and he was Neville Southall, when Big Nev left i had become a teenager and i still remember the feeling that i would never see a keeper as good in an Everton shirt ever again.
    Big Nev will always be irreplacable in my eyes!!!

    Sorry to show my age to you young pups, but there was nothing more heartbreaking to me than the day Alan Ball moved to Arsenal. As a 11yo i was being teased rotten in school about him leaving Everton, i didnt believe any of the kids, saying that Alan Ball would never leave EFC, when i got home there it all was on the news, i cried all night.
    I know a good friend of mine who was also an AB fan actually changed allegiances to Arsenal that day...........but me in my wisdom stuck with the blue boys!!!

    After 'Bally's ' last game for us it is rumoured he walked across the pitch when all the crowds had left, boots in hand, openly crying. He never wanted to leave, which sometimes is part and parcel of football, but i think in this day and age of not much loyalty from players it makes Alan's departure that bit sadder.

    Thanks for that post Fizzy, people sometimes think were old sentimentalists and that nothing is as good now as it was then. Believe me its true in some cases, but you really dont get players of the attitude, class, passion and loyalty of the likes of Alan Ball anymore.
    I sat next to Liam Brady in Alan Ball's Funeral in Winchester Cathedral, enough said, if you heard what he had to say about him, needless to say i was in floods of tears that day aswell...

    Alan Ball without a shadow of a doubt. I remember seeing him take the pi.ss out of the RS by sitting on the ball and he was just brilliant when we won the league in 69/70. When he left I just couldn't believe it. I remember years later when he was playing for Southampton at GP and we gave him the most amazing reception, Ball played like crap because he said his eyes were just filled with tears. For me he's the finest blue I've seen, even above Alex Young who I thought was a god..........

    I'd go along with this. I only had a season ticket for 2 years, but Graveson was the best player i got to see. I was gutted when we sold him and thought we should have got alot more money for him.

    Lee Carsley was a terrific pro for us who blossomed as an exceptional holding midfield ball winner, but Radzinski was never one of my favourites, a bit of a headless chicken at times his feet seemed to move faster than his brain. I will never forget how he turned Turk when he left for Fulham, telling Rooney through the press that he should move on to further himself.

    I liked Gravesen, Andy Johnson, Lescott, Pienaar, and my favorite Arteta. Time marches on, but we had a good club back in those days with players I really liked.

    Arteta for me. I'm 19 but I only really started following Everton and football as a whole when he first came and when the constant rumors about him going in the summer transfer window wouldn't go away I just really hoped they wouldn't be true. He may not have been at his best the last couple of seasons he was with us but he was definatly one of the most talented players we've had for a long time and I only wish we could have progressed further with him.

    is everyone sure they miss arteta everyone wanted him gone when he was here including me and im glad hes gone he had his best moments for everton but soon as the contract was given that was him done.  the only thing i miss about arteta is the song it means we only sing 2 songs to sing now everton everton everton and if you know your history

    for me the obvious choice was rooney. the whole ` once a blue always a blue` showed me that there was without doubt no loyalty in football anymore.  but i couldnt really blame him.  players now leave because its a differnet game now;. no more loyalty. there is and never will be a player that i will be gutted about leavin because they have better opportunities and dont wanna be here anymore and justifiably so. but if forced i would say rooney, gravesen and kanchelskis.
    but lets face it..does it break any ones heart anymore? no..coz it a business an it sucks

    haha usa usa will only be sung for 2 months (if moyes plays him) or if howard saves a penalty, and as for vic hopefully we will be singing it but really doubt it
