Get over Barkley

Why's everyone buzzing over Ross Barkley? he's just a kid who has only just established himself into the full squad.. people who say lets change the game and get barkley on, why? why would you bring on another midfielder instead of 3 forwards who are sitting on the bench (Strac, Vellios, McAleny).

You people say lets change to 4-4-2 but hows barkley going to fit into the formation? maybe when hes 20-23

I think people are buzzing because he's obviously talented.  It's normal it seems to get over excited by youth prospects, but I agree that we need to back off a bit, the expectation is too high already on the lad.

Rooney probably distorted the view of young players being the prodigious kid he was.

We need to keep hold of the lad though, we can probably build a team around him in 5 years if he fulfills his potential.

The only way that the lad will get experience is by playing. I agree that some people expect a lot of him but he isn't going to become a better player by sitting on the bench is he?

I am not sure that playing 90mph Premiership games is the only way.  that makes you terrified of mistakes, driven only to win, not create and invent.

If he is making mistakes in the games then it is wise to take him out of the team. But he has to play to gain experience and he will surely only become a better player with some game time. I don't know if I would start him when everyone is fit, but I would start him over Phil Neville in midfield any day.

Neville and Barkley offer two different things.  Barkley looks creative, gifted, attack minded and fearless.  Neville doesn't.

He may be the least creative passer on the planet, but he does offer stability and shape, good positional discipline, excellent tackler and marker.  I can't believe I just defended him.

I think giving Barkley run outs when the pressure isn't on, when he has time to play and enjoy it is important, if he gets mired in the old pros mentality too early he won't blossom like he probably can.  He needs to like playing, skinning Ossie in training and all, not just want to win.  He's what, 17, we have time, so does he, but pressure and too much bad football could make Sean Davis out of Lothar Mattheus.

To add to that though, playing Rodwell, Fellaini and Neville in midfield is a crime, so in that case, play him.

I don't think Barkley has to play every week, but if you can play football then you can play football. I have seen him make some mistakes in games which is normal as every player does, but I have seen that he offers a lot to the team when he does play. He may only be young, but as I have already said he will only benefit from game time in my opinion, it is all about the young lad learning about what it is like to play in the PL. If he makes some mistakes then by all means take him out of the team but I haven't seen him play for ages (2 minutes against Bolton doesn't really count).

It's been a while, he looked great against QPR but against Blackburn he made too many mistakes, whilst also still looking quite bright in an otherwise Godawful game.  I think maybe he needed a bit of a reality check there, bringing back down, he's probably very excitable at his age, I know I was!

Some more time wouldn't go amiss generally though.

Well Look at Jose Baxter, he's been shown has a real talent amongst the youth ranks and what did we do with him loan him to tranmere to get that experience... we could do the same with barkley next season as hes not much use to us at this minute in his career

I have said before that our squad is too small to loan him out.

I saw Baxter play against Forest a few years back.  He was quite decent, but I wasn't bowled over.  I think he can do okay, but Barkley can be something impressive I think. I think keeping him on the fringes and at a decentr training ground is better than getting the lad kicked all over a mudbath in League 1

I remember after that goal at Forest many people were saying he would be the next big thing. Hopefully he will do well out on loan and maybe he will be a good player for us one day.

sometimes its better for a young lad to hit the lower leagues to get into the real physical aspect of the game and im saying loan him next year when we will hopefully have at least 3 more established players amongst the squad we have now with the signing of drenthe added most definately

@ Mavis - I know you want to play Barkley when there is no pressure on him. With the team as it currently is, there is never going to be a game without pressure on him. We're not good enough to be 3-0 up in a game to give him a chance to come on. The sooner Moyes realises that, the better, because he knows he'll have to play Barkley in games were we are 1-0, 2-1 up.

I'll give you a list of games with no pressure where he wont get roughed up:

    Man U
    Man City
    Chelsea
    Arsenal

We don't win these games, so why not let him have a go.

If you are good enough to play then you should be in the team, its as simple as that really. If he shows signs of inexperience and he is making mistakes when he is playing then he should be dropped but if he is good enough to play he should play.

It has to be at least 50% of the time he gets the ball he shoots. I'm sure he's Darren Gibson in disguise.
