It all dates to when Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, and he decided to cut taxes but not cut spending, deciding that deficits don't matter. Politically, apparently they don't. It's free money. We vote for politicians who promise us something for nothing.
The first President George Bush took a political hit for raising taxes - he got voted out in 1992 - but the American economy benefitted from that tax increase and, under Bill Clinton, who was lucky his predecessor raised taxes but had to good sense not to blow it - the government was solvent for a decade. Then George W. Bush gave it all away with two big tax cuts for the wealthy and a couple of wars that were not paid for, and what do we have to show for it?
The only reason we aren't sunk yet is because our economy is so big, compared to Portugal, Ireland and Greece, that it takes a lot to move it up or down. But we are in trouble in our economy, especially because we are losing our manufacturing base. If you don't have jobs, who pays the taxes? Are we all going to be working at Target for $9 an hour? Who will buy all the cheap crap from China then? Or the oil from the Middle East?
