For legal reasons the club in question isn't mentioned (am a little surprised that they've said this at all)......

    Second last paragraph......

Its close to a story i heard once before....might be news to some.....

I'll post it in 'General sport', because obviously i've no idea which club they're talking about, its just a general comment the Guardian have made on Speed.....

I heard of it at the time, it was "allegedly" Howard Kendal who only the week before had "allegedly" passed out on the team bus after getting bladdered at Blackburn.

is this the same team that wouldn't sign Deon Dublin because he was black if the rumours are to be true that you hear...??

That sounds similar to other things I've heard about kendall too

Altho I heard the last straw was that Speed, having been substituted in a game, sat in the dugout and took a drink out of a Lucozade Sport bottle that Kendall had been drinking from - only to discover it was whiskey in it!

i would imagine this story will eventually become public knowledge soon enough.....i mean, this story brings into question the character of all Speed's former managers......but Speed only signed 1 Confidentiality Agreement that i know of, so the Guardian have been pretty cheeky here.....does a Confidentiality agreement become null & void when the person signing it dies?.....

Extract for a report in the Daily Mail.....

He married his wife Louise and moved to Everton under Joe Royle the club he had supported as a boy for a fee of £3.5 million.
But although his days at Everton included some great highs - scoring on his debut, equalising in the Merseyside Derby and netting the only hat-trick of his career, it was to end acrimoniously after just two years.
He had been installed as captain of the club for the 1997-1998 season by the then manager Howard Kendall but moved to Newcastle for a fee of £5.5million under controversial circumstances.
Speed never fully explained his reasons for leaving Everton. There were rumours that he refused to travel to an away game at West Ham while some have mentioned Kendall's excessive drinking as playing a role.

In an interview with the Liverpool Echo, he said: 'You know why I'm leaving, but I can't explain myself publicly because it would damage the good name of Everton Football Club and I'm not prepared to do that.'

Clearly the newspapers can mention the Kendall rumour....

It doesn't matter that Speed signed a confidentiality agreement.  That would only be binding on the people who signed it.  Even then it would only give a remedy in damages for breach of contract, so Speed could have disclosed at any time if anyone was willing to pay enough.

Fact is, anyone else who wasnt a party to that agreement could say what they like within the limits of the law. Put simply, if any paper ran the article and said that it was Kendall then they would have to prove it was fact, which would be an interesting case - to see if anyone was willing to substantiate the rumour. If they proved it was factual then then Kendall would not have any remedy against the paper.

    -----------------

well weve seen 2 reasons now why speed had left everton this one and the incident with the coach to an away game, both incidents seem to point the finger at kendall and speed being made out the bad guy so evertons board could take the money off newcastle without any come back from fans (wouldnt suprise me) anyone think theres any truth in either of these reason or just think they are total rumour, suppose we will never find out now, unless a close friend or relative decide to write a book on gary speed and disclose it, anyway he was a good blue and i really hope he rests in peace and we give him a good send off sunday.
