David Moyes says Royston Drenthe must adopt the team’s work ethic

ROYSTON DRENTHE needs to buy into Everton FC’s relentless work ethic if he is to become a regular Blues starter – home and away.

The Dutch winger has made an immediate impact since his loan signing from Real Madrid, scoring two goals and adding an outstanding five assists for Everton FC.

But it’s his work helping out full-back Leighton Baines in his own penalty area, especially away from home, that manager David Moyes wants to see more of.

“That would be the problem (helping out defensively),” said Moyes. “At home it might be all right but away from home not so much.”

Drenthe battled on with an ankle injury against Wolves on Saturday and played his part in an important 2-1 victory.

Moyes added: “Sure he can come on and do little bits, but it’s getting to understand he’s part of a team which is not at the top of the league at the moment and not really completely on top of games.

“A big part of today’s game was going to be a fight. You’ve got to make sure you win your individual battles with the Wolves players.

“Wolves are going to compete with you and that’s why we were always saying ‘get back into your position.’

“We’re happy when he gets the ball.

“But he’s got to understand there’s a lot of other things to the game as well.

“We expect that. We’ve always said Everton’s a hard working, industrious football club which expects its players to sweat blood and put everything they can into the game.

“And hopefully from there we can show we’re talented and can play good football as well.

People pay good money round here and the first part is they want to see you run up and down and be competitive.

“And to be fair to the lad he stuck at it. We were taking him off because he got an ankle injury in the first half.

“It was touch and go and we had Bily ready to go on five minutes into the second half but he kept going and kept going and started to get a bit more life and did well to last as long as he did.”

Drenthe had one of his quieter games against Wolves, but his pace and willingness to cut inside and shoot has already endeared him to Blues fans.

And since he arrived in the transfer window the stats suggest Everton’s defensive displays are not dramatically different when he is on the pitch, but their potency in front of goal increases significantly for his presence.

Drenthe has easily been one of our best performers this season. We need more flair and we must try and get a pre contract or somthing for him. He can work on his tracking back and defending in the meantime but he does what hes good at very well and thats attacking.
