Moyes unhappy with way in which his side fell behind.

David Moyes bemoaned his side’s poor defending after they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to in-form Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Blues fell behind following John Heitinga’s 11th minute own goal and were left with a mountain to climb when Ryan Taylor rattled in a superb long-range second on the half hour.

Jack Rodwell headed home Royston Drenthe’s corner to reduce arrears on the stroke of half-time but the visitors were unable to build any momentum after the break.

And Moyes said: “We knew coming here that we were going to have a hard game. They are on a good run and we knew they were going to start fast and we obliged them.

“I think you make your own luck and we did not do that with our defending in the first half.”

At 2-1 down the Blues could have had a penalty when Louis Saha’s goal-bound shot struck Dan Gosling’s arm and skewed away to safety.

“That was a penalty,” said Moyes.” It was going in the net, the shot was going in. At the time I did not quite realise it had hit his arm but it did and the goalkeeper wasn’t getting it.

“That was maybe 10 minutes into the second half and that would have made it 2-2.”

The nature in which the Blues found themselves 2-0 down was of particular frustration to Moyes given that his side had created several opportunities of their own early on.

“We were 2-0 down and you could look at it and say we had created the better chances,” he added. “But as I said you make your own luck and we did not do that with the way we defended.”

Unfortunately, you can't defend yourself to victory...

His substitution's today were baffling. Why did we bring on a centre back (Distin) and put a centre back in midfield (Heitinga) when Neville was taken off? Why did we not bring on Stracqualursi when we need a goal? Why did we wait until there is 10 minutes to go to bring on McFadden? When McFadden did come on why was he playing on right midfield? What's the point in bringing Cahill on when we are 2-0 down and need a goal? Apart from this, well done David  :P

of course you can...start from a clean sheet and build from there !!
at least if you dont concede you draw..
if you dont concede and score yourself ..you win !!!

    simple, basic football logic....

Point I'm makin PEK is that Moyes only ever talks about/concentrates on is defending; and then nicking one on the break.  Its not the best tactic. Sometimes you need to take it too the opposition, and that's just not in Moyes make up.

i agree with this above... but that isn't what you said...

moyes was a defender and it's plainly obvious thats what he bases his team/tactics/train of thought around.....

I've said this in another thread, but at the moment, we could play 20 in defence and still concede. We need to setup to score goals and accept we're going to concede.

I'm still adamant yobo would have been better than Distin and heitinga.

moyes is still playing the same tactics that got us 4th place. how many games that season did we nick a one nil win?? problem is the game has evolved since those days and playing that way will no longer work. current results prove that fact

This comment from Moyes really narked me. Moaning about poor defending. We have proven over the last 18 months that we CANNOT defend well for 90 mins. Why oh why set the team up every single week in the same way, simply to try not to concede and maybe nick a goal from a set piece etc. Its a tired tactic that simply doesnt work anymore. We need some variety in our play and team selection. Being a forward at Everton must be a nightmare. They get very little or no service and when they arent somehow banging the goals in are dropped and slated. Moyes has been great for us, but he needs to stop being so stubborn and show a little faith in our attacking players for a change. We need to start playing to our strengths instead of everyone elses!

agree with that 100%. Saha is best being played with a partner. Moyes needs to remove the shackles on this team.and grow a pair. otherwise its gonna be a very long season. far too negative a manager in my opinion. ok we have no money but he still has a good squad of players to choosw from. its just that he chooses to play the least positive formation and tactics. ie one up front at home to newly promoted qpr on the 1st game is unaceptable.
