Moyes' tactics

I think it's safe to say that the majority of us are fed up with Moyes constantly going one up front, especially at home. However, has anyone tried to think about why he is so adamant to continue this, despite the fact he must have got an idea that it's not a popular tactic with the fans? Here's my take on it.....

We have six strikers currently at the club, one long-term injured (Vic), one on loan (Denis) and probably not going to get much of a chance and probably will leave at the end of the loan if he doesn't get the chances, and then you've got Faddy, who's not match fit apparently and will probably also be limited in opportunities. If you throw into the mix that Saha's not the most reliable when it comes to injuries, that leaves us with Vellios and Gueye, both still building up experience, yet they would probably be the most likely to play out of all six as they don't struggle with injury on a regular basis and in theory, shouldn't be limited in opportunities.

I think it is because of these factors that Moyes chooses to go one up front. With Vic being out long-term and Moyes seemingly not liking Denis, and McFadden not being match-fit, that's left us with three strikers, Saha, Vellios and Gueye. If we were to go two up front, and one of them gets injured (which is quite likely with Louis) then we're royally screwed. So Moyes is using strikers sparingly to ensure we don't have those problems.

In January, we need to buy two strikers using whatever money we got from August, which would take us up to eight strikers, but then I think if we do that, hopefully Moyes will think 'well actually, we can go two up front now as I've plenty of strikers at my disposal so it won't be too much of an issue should we suffer an injury.'

I've said it time and time again, Bill has got to support Moyes financially. GIVE him the money to go and buy a couple of strikers. We've seen what Moyes can do even with tight purse strings, I have faith that he can get two on the cheap, but really, it's not good enough and the sooner we can get investment the better.

If we get investment, then I'd say we need two or three strikers, another Right Back, another Left Back to challenge Baines, and a couple of attacking Midfielders and Wingers. I would estimate that we'd need about £50m-£60m in order to build a good squad. Just looking on the back of the Man Utd programme and we've got 27 players in the squad list..... NOT GOOD ENOUGH.

    He's lost the plot fully.

Sticks with tactics that aren't working

Sticks with players who aren't performing.

Ruins strikers confidence by not playing them.

Leaves t too late with his subs

I agree with all of your points actually Milky, but as for tactics that aren't working and sticking with players who are under performing, wouldn't you agree that his hand has pretty much been forced due to the small size of the squad? It was a farce that the Arteta deal went through at a time that meant Moyes couldn't touch any of the money to buy players and I hope that never happens again.

What is all this crap about a small squad. We're not in Europe, out of the Carling cup, will probably have two or three games in the FA cup and the rest of the league fixtures. When did it become necessary to have 27 players, 27 ffs. If we only had 15, the lazy b'stards wouldn't be able to take it easy and Moyes wouldn't be pi.ssing them all off ................

I don,t think the issue is the formation but more the selection, style and playing people out of position.

I personally like both Rodwell and Fellaini but when we have them both in the team we will never create enough because they are defensive mids. Happy with Coleman on the right. Left has to be Drenthe because he is creative. Therefore we have 1 striker and two creative players. Ross Barkley should be allow to grow in this position. Osman is above avarage in the middle but useless on the wing. Cahill can be a threat but is not creative and therefore cannot be in the team ifwe have two DMs. All successful teams have 4 at the back, 2 fast widemen that get to the byline and in the middle a holding player and a creative player who can support the strikers and get goals. Upfront you need your goal scorer and link man who can drop deep if needed or score goals (ala Cantona, Beardsley, Sheringham etc)

Therefore I would pick a back four with Baines, Jags, Distin and Hibbert (need a right back who can cross) Mid Drenthe, Fellaini/Rodwell, Barkley/Osman and Coleman. Upfront Cahill and Saha.

If we need to get a goal I would not push Fellaini forward but take him off and give an Attacking mid a go.

We looked solid against United but could not create anything same with Chelsea (league) and City. I would rather loss trying than park the bus.

I think he plays one up front because that is what gets us more points than all but the richest teams. This would be why we keep finishing above the rest.
