Troubled Water For the Premier League?

So surprise, surprise one of the "Sky 4" has decided its time for the rich to get richer, and the poor to get poorer. I would hope that the other Premier league chairmen will show a bit of common sense and shoot this idea down.

Wouldn't it be great if the only reason the Yanks had bought that lot was to make money from selling the foreign TV rights, and if it did get shot down decided to pull out? And if they really want to do it, let them go alone in a league of one where they won't have to worry that "next year will be our year"

The intro's all me, the rest is a really badly formatted cut and paste from the guardian website, that the links lead to. Basically the redshite want clubs to sell their own foreign tv rights.

I'll clean it up and just leave the links, didn't realize it looked so crappy.

Only the foreign element. It was natural that something like this would happen after the court decision last week.

I'd be interested to see just how much folk abroad would be willing to pay; and how the other teams they play against would fair in this. The RS sell their rights abroad. Everton say sod off, you're not showing our game unless you cough up...

Well, they might get a big bucks offer from abroad, but what happens if everyone refuses to allow their team to appear on that channel?

To be viable, I would imagine all of the big clubs would have to agree to do it together, but then the rich get richer etc. At that point, do the other clubs say, sod it, we dont want to be involved with you lot anymore?

I think messy is the word mate!

Implications galore then mate by the sounds of it, im sort of guessing thoug that after the ruling last week, the clubs will ask for more money from the foreign tv channels, and surely if this was the case, sky could turn round and say we can afford to give you as much???

well it is the reason the foriegners have taken control, the money that can be made from selling ther eown tv rights abroad are massive, sky make over 1 billion from selling the premiership to foriegn tv companies and all prem clubs get about 17 million each, the likes of liverpool and man utd would make a lot more selling there own tv rights abroad, and then there other clubs who wouldnt really have any takers, look at the likes of blackpool who were promoted last season!! how they going to make any money from selling there games abroad. would liverpool and man utd etc only be able to sell there home games abroad? as they cant sell the rights for an away game can they ? the major implication i can see is that to do this it would need a vote from the premier league as happened in 2003 with man utd wanting to sell there own rights, the vote was 20 against 1 in favour(man utd) if it came to a vote again there would still be to many teams voting against it so its a no win for liverpool, unless and this is the problem the bigger teams threaten to leave the premier league , this is were you could start seeing a breakaway european super league, and lets face it the owners at liverpool and man utd are just in it for money there not interested in the english leagues as long as they can make a lot of money they dont care.

Typical greedy RS. But TBF they know that the game is up for them. They have known that they cannot compete with United and Chelsea for the last 8-9 years, Arsenal are bigger yet still cannot compete anymore and now City have a bottomless pit of money. The guaranteed income from the ECL is now just a distant memory so I imagine there are a few squeaky @rses over at Analfield.

14 teams in the premier league would have to vote for it to make the change.

4, arguably 5, teams would benefit from it.

You'd have to think that the reason the prem is so strong is because 14 teams have to agree on something to make it happen and there isn't a situation where Real and Barca thrash every team in the league and see who beats each other on goal difference on the final day.

So the question to the other 15,16, teams is:

'due to the recent court case there will be a change to the way TV rights are sold. While making that change do you mind if a couple of us dick you over for a load of money? Best regards, liverpool'

Unsurprising to see liverpool rear their ugly head on this issue, but its not like there is anything positive in it for the voting clubs to want to make it happen.

That liverpool director has a point about getting seven shades kicked out of them on the European stage though. Still, what goes around comes around.

the funny thing about a european super league is that there already is one. The champions league... which isn't actually a league and nor is it for champions either. So yes, the game is fcked but not to the extent where a break away league could happen.

At the end of the day FIFA and UEFA want every country on the planet hooked on playing football and plugged into they competitions.

We might not like what that looks like, blatter and co. But they'll fight tooth and nail to stop that sort of thing from happening and to be fair, much as they are pretty laughable you have to give them credit for the way they just brushed aside all that is English from the world cup bidding process like an unwanted, unnecessary and substandard side dish.

The clubs involved would have to betray football in their own countries to make that happen and footbal around the globe too. And walk away from FIFA and UEFA to boot. The latter not even being something that nations are willing to do.

I really can't see Bobby Charlton on the board of Man United taking such a gamble.

Actually, just saw this on the beeb:

Ferguson told BBC Sport: "We are being shown in 212 countries at the moment so whatever we are being paid, it is not enough.

"There is a negotiation to be had there next time around.
[Individual rights] is the big issue in Spain at the moment but I've no
    great feelings about that.

"We'd love to have our own but I don't think it should happen that way. It's quite fair to have all equal shares."

Note the change is class from United to liverpool on the subject.

The RS still like to compare themselves to Barca and Real. The point being they are not in the ECL anymore and will struggle to get into the Uefa league. They are just as fckd as the rest of us....

But they will have a justice campaign, a march, a petition and some fat labour MPs standing up in parliament for them. They may also recruit Clarence the magical duck to charm all fans of wildfowl related ephemera.
