Coaching

I have read a few posts on where people think our frailties are. on the face of it game by game its seems apparent that coupled with seemingly negative formations and what appear to be simple defensive errors and a lack of midfield creativity(apart from the few flashes of brilliance) and poor play in the final third the players we have are not great, but most of the squad have been together for a long time and played well enough for a cup run to the final and european qualification so i dont see how they collectivly become an indifferent squad so i wonder if its the way the squad is coached , with the exeption of jimmy lumsden the other coaches (david moyes ,steve round) were defenders(steve round has only ever played 9 games as a pro) and if the squad is coached with a defensive mentality on the trainng ground to match defensive formations then it will be difficult as a player to play in an attacking way becasue that would be going against the manager. As far as mistakes are concerned it is my belief that if it becomes a mistake per game that costs goals or give the oposition chances the player maybe needs to be taken out of the first team and work on certain aspects of his game. no matter how good you are you can always learn more as a footballer. Just A Thought.

unless you know what is being coached at finch farm you cant really comment on what being coached...however the impression is that we are being coached with defence as the formost topic of sessions...if this is the case then it compounds the fact even more that we are poor defensively and conceding too many goals.....

before the game on saturday we were talking and most people were saying "what we do know is we will concede.....what we dont know is if we will score and if we do it will probably only be only one..."

yeh agreed we are not privy to the sessions at finch farm , it just appears that whoever we play home or away its a 'defend and we might sneak one at the other end' i know its hard to be positive when your team isnt having the best of runs but as a manager you have to stay positive and try to say and do the positive things , but i agree on all your above points

also i personally dont think the 4-5-1 is the solution for good attacking play unless you've got midfoelders who can quickly join in when going forward..we normally have 1-2 namely cahill and osman...look at man u they play 4-4-2 but when attacking usually have 5-6 layers in and around the box...which is why they create loads of chances and score plenty of goals ...as do citeh (now) and chelsea,

yeh in dont like 451 ,i think moyes has to trust the midfield 4 to be able to compete and hold their own without the extra defensive midfield player and he must also see we have not got a striker that can play up front on his own week in week out and score goals

I've been banging on for a few years about needing an attacking coach. As you pointed out billy there isn't an attacking coach at the club.

You can see what is expected of the strikers we've brought to the club and what has subsequently happened to them.

Like KHL said, playing 4-5-1 puts a lot of pressure on a team when attacking. Your lone striker is expected to hold it up and then for players to bomb on from midfield to make up the numbers. A thankless task for a forward; and also one that doesnt really need a forward hence us playing Tim or Felli up there in the past - just someone to pluck the ball and hold it up for the support to arrive.

Its not a very effective style of football and is more likely to bring on pressure - 9 outfield players more often than not in your own half - and sometimes even the forward player dropping deep.

I think 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 or even the system Barce employ could all work with the players we have at our disposal.

Moyes has not moved from 4-5-1 in the time he has been with us. Its a shame he wont try bringing in an attack minded coach.

i never really thought we had good enough, central midfielders in the past to play just 4 in there,we always looked like we were going to get overun, arteta wasnt strong in centre, felliani was inexperienced as was rodwell, but now with felliani a little older and rodwell looking better, i really think, these 2 can cope defensively, moyes is going on how good felliani is and how important he is yet he wont play him in a midfield 4, i would go with drenthe and barkley as well, or if hes going to play 4-5-1 use someone like barkley behind the front man as we have little or no creativity in final 3rd, same give drenthe a run on the left instead of an out of position osman. i also think vellios and saha would be a really good partnership, and if saha is injured get denis with vellios, imagine bainesy swinging in his crosses for them 2 they would cause havoc.
